George Jackson's insight:

The topic of this blog post by clkgamer at www.scifibloggers.com sounds oddly similar to the plot of the film "Stranded" that we just reviewed for episode 15 of our podcast http://www.scifisuperfriends.com/episode-15-stranded/. Although, the characters of that film were not stuck ther voluntarily. It does make me wonder how survival would be possible even if you were prepared to stay on Mars for the rest of your life. How does the saying go?... "Its a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there."

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, May 4, 2013 12:44 AM

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes "Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim."
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Jurassic Park 4 will return to Isla Nublar!

Jurassic Park 4 will return to Isla Nublar! | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it
Still trying to wrap your head around potential plot points for Jurassic Park 4 (the whole world knows dinosaurs exist by now... right?) Well add this bit of news to your plotting, Jp 4 will return to the original dino isle, Isla Nublar!
George Jackson's insight:

I picked this story up from Meredith Woerner at io9.com.

Its probably a good idea to take it back to Isla Nubar. Just stay off the main land unless you have something fantastic planned. The San Diego thing in JP2... FAIL. I thought that JP3 pretty much killed this franchise for good. But, if you insist upon bringing this back and taking another stabb at it (likely with A LOT of 3D effects) go ahead. My ten year old is crazy for dinos and will beg me to see this. He'll probably name off every monster you throw on the screen. So alright Mr.Trevorrow, writers, and potential actors... let's get this one right and don't let us down.

George Jackson's insight:

Fantasy films have not been getting enough love from us at The Sci-Fi Super Friends, in either the podcast or the blog. The truth is that for our podcast, we review films that can be found on Netflix streaming. So the selection, of fantasy that we would like to review is limited. As far as current movies, the last fantasy film that I saw in the theaters was The Hobbit, which I did enjoy. Maybe when I see it again on video, I'll give my complete impressions of it. Right now there is a lot of attention being paid to the HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones, which I would be watching if I had not had to cancel my premium subscription earlier this year. :-(

I will say this, see the Hobbit on vidieo. Also, (this is pointed to Netflix) PLEASE put some more/better fantasy films on on your streaming service the people would actually WANT  to see.

Starfest: Timothy Zahn on the New Star Wars Movies

Starfest: Timothy Zahn on the New Star Wars Movies | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it
I had the great pleasure to interview Timothy Zahn, the author of the most famous and well-loved books in the expanded universe last weekend at Starfest 2013. (Starfest: Timothy Zahn on the New Star Wars Movies...
George Jackson's insight:

This is an interview done by Alison "Boom" Baumgartner for sciencefiction.com

Good interview. I'm impressed with Zhan's knowledege of the movie media and industry. I'm not surprised that he doesn't have that much knowledge about what Episode 7 is going to be. The way J.J. Abrahms values secrecy, we will be hard pressed to find out much before release.

Zahn has a realistic view of whether his work work will still be cannon or not. But, if he's not involved with the writing, screenplay or at least story boarding, I think that would be a dis-service to the next three films. Zahn is very smart and knowledgable on politics, history and relating them to the SW Universe. I can see why he is such a popular writer.

I myself have almost completed the Thrawn Trilogy. I' started on the last book but put it down for a while. I liked the story in the first two books, but the pace seemed to slow down in the first half of the third book. I imagine I will finish the series some time soon. Personally I totally expect that Grand Admiral Thrawn will be our next villian in Episodes 7, 8, 9.

Hollywood's Love of Dystopian Dollars

Hollywood's Love of Dystopian Dollars | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it

My initial thought is simply that dystopia sells. It’s the same reason why the mainstream media covering technology tends to harp on the downsides of new tech, sometimes to the point of fear mongering. They are tracking you! They want to know your location! They want to record you going to the bathroom!

Most people are predisposed to fear what they do not understand. Hollywood’s futuristic films are simply playing to this fear in the same way that horror films are packed with moments meant to startle you.

George Jackson's insight:

Siegler is right. Dystopia sells. I mean, how many films has the Sci-Fi Super Friends Podcast reviewed so far that deals with the subject? I'd say at least four or five. This summer alone there at least three or four movies have or will be released that are explicitly dystopian or have these types of over-undertones. Sci-fi novelists have been writing about this stuff for years, and it only makes sense that Hollywood follow suite. Besides, who's to say that we aren't living in a dystopian society right now? Think about that.

Why Drew Goddard Should Direct the Next Star Trek Movie

Why Drew Goddard Should Direct the Next Star Trek Movie | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it
Maybe J.J. Abrams will really be able to helm Star Trek 3 after Star Wars VII. But we kind of doubt it.
George Jackson's insight:

Once again Charlie Jane Anders makes some great points. I was not that familiar with Drew Goddard himself. But he seems to have an impressive resume that would appearantly qualify him to take the helm of the third Trek film. Although I think J.J. could do the third film while doing Star Wars Episode VII, I agree with Jane, give Goddard a shot. What the hell?
