Altmetrics: a new impact factor for new publishings

Altmetrics: a new impact factor for new publishings | Science ouverte - Open science | Scoop.it

In the latest issue of Research Information, David Stuart is wondering how researchers now can evaluate the impact of these new ways of publishing, including social channels.

One of the answer is Altmetrics, the growing application that you will find now in every science journals and databases (like Scopus for e.g.) and which measures popularity of an article on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Use of this way to measure the research performance is still controversial (but still is Impact Factor 50 years after its beginning!) and “there is a long way to go before altmetrics fully answer any of the questions that are being raised by the new research environment“, says David.

However, altmetrics fast adoption shows that “research landscape is much more than journal articles, and there is a lot of value to be created by measuring the connections between the new types of publication“.

Mendeley platform reveals global science reading trends

Mendeley platform reveals global science reading trends | Science ouverte - Open science | Scoop.it
A report finds "compelling evidence" that low R&D spend correlates with less access to academic papers, and time spent studying them.

A low spend on research and development (R&D) by a country may be limiting researchers' access to academic papers, and could be undermining their productivity and achievements, a report has found.

Limited access to scholarly content, which is a particular problem in developing nations, may have an indirect but negative impact on the number of papers published and Nobel prizes won, according to the 'Global Research Report',published by research collaboration platform Mendeley yesterday (1 November).

Such links between R&D spending, journal access and achievement highlight the potential benefits of open source academic publishing, particularly in low-income countries, the report says. (...) - by Jan Piotrowski, SciDev.net, 2 novembre 2012

Leaving the theatre of the absurd – is open access publishing a necessity for science to flourish? | iSGTW

If this summer’s Royal Society report arguing for a more open practice of science in public policy and business wasn’t convincing enough then the satirical science website PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper) comics, by Panamanian cartoonist Jorge Cham, may change your mind, as it illustrates one researcher’s change of heart when faced with a life and death situation. The film is a digestible eight-minute animation of the problematic scientific publishing landscape and how open access, the free and immediate online availability of research articles with full re-use rights, can add value.
