Everywhere, the consumption of vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts, seeds and fruits is much below that recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Mean- while, people are consuming too much fat, processed meat, salt and sugary drinks.

Global food systems are failing to keep us all fed, let alone healthy. How food is grown, distributed, processed, marketed and sold determines which foods are available, afforda- ble and desirable. These factors have a crucial role in the quality of people’s diets, and hence play a vital part in health.

Obesity UK  : But the amount of excess weight the nation is carrying isn’t equal. On average, people in socially disadvantaged groups – those less educated or on lower incomes – are more likely to be overweight. This can be explained by the fact that the socially disadvantaged tend to have less time for cooking, less knowledge about healthy eating and less money for healthy food. Levels of takeaway food consumption are also greater in disadvantaged groups. 

Takeaway Food  :A sector with minimal nutritional data available to influence consumer choice  , A Sector where value is measured mostly by portion size

The digital economy is changing the world of work and creating new jobs that never existed before.
Alan Marson's insight:

"One of the great things about influencer marketing is that brands producing global messaging can work with local influencers, in different markets, to localise the content and share the message in a way that's unique to each country."
The tricky part for influencers and brands is making sure they don't fall foul of local advertising regulations - making it clear to viewers and readers when content is paid-for promotional material, for example.
And influencers have to be careful not to associate themselves with brands that might lose them followers rather than gain them.

The guilty secrets of an Angry Chef

I have guilt. I have been working with food for the past twenty years. Ten years of that was in restaurants and ten years as a development chef in the food manufacturing industry. In that time a huge food related health and obesity crisis has unfolded and I can’t help feeling responsible. All that cream, butter and sugar I fed people. All those rich sauces and indulgent desserts. I know it is not entirely my fault, but it does play on my mind.

Let us be clear here!, unlike clean eaters or Paleo enthusiasts, PTs are not the enemy of Angry Chef. They have an important role in helping to fight obesity and encouraging people to lead healthier lifestyles. Gyms can be great initial touch points for anyone looking to improve their health and start making sensible changes to their diet. PTs giving out good diet advice can do a huge amount of good. But as is all too common, seductive messages from the world of pseudoscience can easily drown out common sense.

So many of us have omitted or cut down on our consumption of red meat due to negative reports in the press. However, I believe that unprocessed,

The evidence on meat isn’t iron-clad, but “less meat” seems reasonable given that people need to eat more vegetables and fruits, and less overall. The calories need to come from somewhere, and we’re pretty sure meat — especially processed and fatty meat — isn’t doing us any good, so it makes sense to cut back.

Recent reviews in the USA showed that consumption in the USA close to twice the recommened level , so eating less makes even more sence , although the majority consumers are unaware of the link between how livestock and dairy industry impact on climate change and water usage , it will continue to grow in importance. 

I feel that food industry professsional and registered nutritionist have a role to engage , inform , and influence consumer food choice to bridge between Healthy People and a Healthy Planet , afterall the baby boomers consumers of today may not have to consider eating insects in our lifetime , but our actions are forcing this decision onto our children and grandchildren

From the review in The Conversation "If we assume that a quarter of the Australian population eats 50 grams per day of processed meat, then the lifetime risk for the three-quarters who eat no processed meat would be 7.9% (or about one in 13). For those who eat 50 grams per day, the lifetime risk would be 9.3% (or about one in 11)"

With the increased concern on Climate change , water availabillty learn more about this USA initiative to reduce the level of meat consumed in school meals ,"The hybrid is healthier than all-beef dishes—and a more sustainable option too"

"Why use mushrooms as a stand-in for beef? They contain a chemical cocktail that yields a meaty taste called umami, Japanese for “delicious.” But in contrast to beef, mushrooms boast fewer calories, less sodium and no saturated fat. Those nutritional benefits have persuaded school districts, which must meet national health standards, to try the mixture. For instance, last fall school food provider Sodexo replaced its conventional burgers with versions containing 30 percent mushroom (the percentage counts as a full serving of vegetables). If Sodexo serves the same number of burgers this school year as it typically does, it projects students overall will consume a total of approximately 16 million grams less saturated fat and 300 million milligrams less sodium.

While obesity and its resulting medical complications are a significant problem for both individuals and society as a whole, aren’t there better options that simply taking money and stuffing it into government’s coffers? What about education and availability to healthy food? Safe areas in which to exercise? Let’s not presume that a population as intelligent as that in the United States is purposefully harming itself if it had the resources and options to do better.

Organic milk and meat contain around 50% more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than conventionally produced products, new research has shown.

Key findings:
• both organic milk and meat contain around 50% more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than conventionally produced products
• organic meat had slightly lower concentrations of two saturated fats (myristic and palmitic acid) that are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease
• organic milk contains 40% more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)
• organic milk contains slightly higher concentrations of iron, Vitamin E and some carotenoids
• conventional milk contained 74% more of the essential mineral iodine and slightly more selenium

Clinical Question: Does meat consumption affect mortality?

Evidence: All-cause mortality is higher for increased daily consumption of red meat, especially processed meat. However, the compiled evidence does not link other meat products to all-cause mortality.

Recommendation: Physicians should encourage patients to limit animal products when possible, and substitute red meat and processed red meat with plant-based foods. Patients may supplement a plant-based diet with moderate amounts of fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy if desired.

Undoubtedly the big food industry news this week concerned the decision by Mars to label a number of their products as being only suitable for consumption occasionally due to high levels of fat, salt or sugar. It was an interesting and unexpected move and one that generated a great deal of PR for the brands concerned, namely Dolmio and Uncle Ben’s. Feedback seemed generally positive and I have to admit that I admire them for taking something of a stand for the preserving of flavour. For some

Firstly, what is processed food? This is a problem and I think Food Professionals Voices should be heard rather than those of the money and glory seeking  "Lifestyle Nutritionists "and "Celebrity Chefs" as I am not really sure what people mean when they attack ‘all processed foods’. Is that what they really mean? Do they mean flour, quinoa, rice, cous cous, cashew nuts, dried fruits, seeds, vinegars, sea salt, spices, pasta, milk and cheese? These are all ‘processed’ in some way. Do they mean all tinned goods like tomatoes, tomato puree, pulses, sweetcorn and tuna? Do they mean everything frozen? These things are all processed. Most have been subjected to some sort of heat treatment, which is by far the most common form of processing in the food industry.

New dietary guidelines tell Dutch residents to cut meat consumption to twice a week, for better health and a smaller carbon footprint.

This week, the Netherlands Nutrition Centre — a government-funded program that creates dietary guidelines — issued a recommendation that people eat no more than two servings of meat per week. According to National Geographic, it’s the first time that the Nutrition Centre has placed a hard limit on the amount of meat a person should consume.
The Centre released its recommendations after nearly five years of studying the health and ecological impacts of an average Dutch diet. The new guidelines recommend that a person should consume no more than 500 grams (or a little over a pound) of meat per week. Of that, no more than 300 grams should be red meat, or what the Centre calls “high-carbon.” Instead, the guidelines recommend that people incorporate other sources of protein into their diets, from things like nuts or pulses.

Eating less meat, says a new study, can not only reduce premature death and significantly reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, it would also radically cut healthcare costs.

Because people in wealthy countries eat about twice as much meat as people in developing countries, that’s where the greatest per person health benefits from eating fewer animal products would come in.

About half of these lives would be extended by dropping meat consumption by at least 50 percent and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption by at least 25 percent. Plant Based Foods Association : Meet the new association "Powered by Plants"

Until recently, essentially no one, says longtime food industry critic and researcher Michele Simon. And so she has launched the Plant Based Foods Association, which exists to "ensure a fair and competitive marketplace for businesses selling plant-based foods intended to replace animal products such as meats, dairy, and eggs." The brand-new trade group already has a part-time lobbyist, the longtime vegan- and organic-food advocate Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of former US Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio).After years studying Big Meat trade groups and how they operate, she learned how effective they are, not just at shaping public policy to "promote more harmful foods," she says, but also at communicating with consumers, serving as a go-to source for reporters, and nudging retailers on how to market their products. And so the Plant Based Foods Association aims to conduct those services and develop a "collective voice" for companies that offer animal-free meat, dairy, and egg alternatives.
