Next Generation Science Storylines - Home

Next Generation Science Storylines - Home | K - 5 Science Education | Scoop.it
Hi NGSS Educators. We have just unveiled a new website to support NGSS implementation. The site http://www.nextgenstorylines.org is designed to enable teachers and curriculum leaders to access and to share NGSS-aligned storylines. We expect to have storylines at all grade bands, each eventually with accompanying lesson plans and student materials that teachers could use to adapt and enact the units in their own classrooms. We have gone live with two example storylines, one elementary in life sciences and one high school chemistry, each with some sample lesson plans. Our storylines are created by teacher/researcher teams and focus on coherence, from the student's perspective, where students develop science ideas, piece by piece, by investigating their own questions. It is a curated site so we will be reviewing resources for sharing on the site. Please check it out and if you have materials you would like to get feedback on, and to share, please contact us.
Kathy Renfrew's insight:
This is the work of Brian Reiser and colleagues. I just found it and I will definitely be spending time reading this information and figuring out how I will use it to improve science in Vermont.

Kathy Renfrew's insight:

As I red this article I realize one more time just how critical it is to provide quality science learning experiences to our students. ALL children need access and schools and classrooms are the venues where the playing field gets leveled.

When we don't provide students  opportunities for learning about the world around them, we are doing them  a huge disservice.

Growth mindset guru Carol Dweck says teachers and parents often use her research incorrectly - The Hechinger Report | K - 5 Science Education | Scoop.it
Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck has become something of a cult figure in education and parenting circles. Her research into boosting student motivation has spawned a mini industry of consultants, sold more than a million books and changed the way that many adults praise children. Dweck believes too many students are hobbled by the belief that intelligence …
Kathy Renfrew's insight:

An article that has definite connections to all teaching and learning. We need to remember we are all learners and to learn we must take risks and sometimes make mistakes. That's okay. We learn from those mistakes. We take the new knowledge from the mistake and apply it in our next attempt. Learning is NOT a spectator sport! We need to creatively involved in our own learning.

Morning Meetings: Creating a Safe Space for Learning | K - 5 Science Education | Scoop.it
At Symonds Elementary, teachers use morning meetings to develop valuable social-emotional skills, create a culture of respect and trust, and prepare students to learn.
Kathy Renfrew's insight:

If the Next Generation Science Standards  are to be implemented successfully, students need to feel safe if students are to take risks and learn. Responsive Classroom is one way that a learning environment of safety and respect can be developed  in a classroom. A culture of learning and respect needs to be the norm for students to ask questions, probe each other's thinking and build science concepts together.
