It can be the environment that can be stifling and suffocating for the students. It can be the fact that many of them don’t find it easy to the meaning in their struggles in school."

The Secrets Of Top Students - Edudemic

The Secrets Of Top Students - Edudemic | School Transformation | Scoop.it

"Top students aren’t made, they’re born. After effortlessly absorbing whatever the teacher throws at them, they spout it back on tests and watch the A’s come rolling in. They have exceptionally high IQs, making it next to impossible for the rest of the class to compete with them. They’re the ones who leave exams early and breeze through the most complex material in the syllabus. They are eggheads, nerds, geeks, and their success is the result of innate talent and ability."

Do you believe the attributes above are what is necessary for top students or do you think these are misconceptions? Stephanie Weisman, author of "The Secrets of Top Students", interviewed 45 other "outstanding students – including Rhodes scholars, Goldwater scholars, Fulbright recipients, a National Spelling Bee Champion, and students in top law and medical schools – on how they achieved academic success." (She was also a top student and she discusses the challenges she had in school in this post.)

The answers the students gave might surprise you. What is most important?

* Hard work

* Sacrifice
* Support at home

Three Social Trends That Will Influence Education in 2014

Three Social Trends That Will Influence Education in 2014 | School Transformation | Scoop.it
There are patterns within the trend predictions for 2014 that are worthy of paying attention to. There is strong, if not overwhelming evidence that behaviour patterns of students, educators, employees and professionals are moving towards the use of social tools for learning, working and teaching. Collaborating seamlessly face-to-face and at a distance, bringing the human element to virtual interactions, and personalized learning will prevail in 2014; each facilitated by technology. But it’s not going to be about the technology, it will be about making connections by voice and/or visual, contributing to new knowledge, and learning with and from others—all mediated through social media. It will be the behaviours of students, lifelong learners and educators—their use of technology, specifically social media applications that will influence education in the upcoming year.

Using the Academic Curriculum to Help Students Define Problems

Using the Academic Curriculum to Help Students Define Problems | School Transformation | Scoop.it
How one teacher helps her students combine empathy and their interests to take action.

Visiting Inspired Teaching School for the “Changemaker Days” this past school year was one of my favorite opportunities to see students learning to act on knowledge and empathy to solve problems.   During the 2012-2013 school year, Inspired Teaching’s administration challenged the school community to convert their service days into Changemaker Days, which required teachers to transition from defining service projects to guiding students in creating their own.

First grade teacher Athena Kopsidas paid close attention to where students showed great curiosity in their academic curriculum so that she could help them to identify particular community problems they could address on Changemaker Days.
