Hmmmmm.......

Lou Salza's curator insight, May 16, 8:53 AM

I have been using text to speech almost exclusively for reading articles on the web, newspapers, and courese reading for a course in Leadership I am taking at Case Western Reserve University. I love the e-readers ( Read and Write Gold; Kindle, and Audio books)  because I can jack up the speed and read with my ears as fast as non dyslexics who are fluent readers read with their eyes. We need to understand the 'cost' of eye reading to dyslexic students even when they "graduate" from OG or Wilson: the burden of phonological processing is too high in terms of fatigue. If we don't make the technology more available and acceptable in schools we will deny intelligent students with print challenges the opportunity to study in college, graduate or professional schools.

I still read paper books.  Right now I am reading  A light in August by Faulkner. It is on my night stand and it is a wonderful if slow experience for me. For some, print will never 'fall away' and allow for effortless decoding and pholonological recoding.--Lou

Excerpt:

"Understanding how reading on paper is different from reading on screens requires some explanation of how the brain interprets written language. We often think of reading as a cerebral activity concerned with the abstract—with thoughts and ideas, tone and themes, metaphors and motifs. As far as our brains are concerned, however, text is a tangible part of the physical world we inhabit. In fact, the brain essentially regards letters as physical objects because it does not really have another way of understanding them. As Wolf explains in her book Proust and the Squid, we are not born with brain circuits dedicated to reading. After all, we did not invent writing until relatively recently in our evolutionary history, around the fourth millennium B.C. So the human brain improvises a brand-new circuit for reading by weaving together various regions of neural tissue devoted to other abilities, such as spoken language, motor coordination and vision..."

How To Combat Student Plagiarism - Edudemic

How To Combat Student Plagiarism - Edudemic | School Psychology Tech | Scoop.it

As teachers, when we assign a research project, we often focus on the end product: the research essay, presentation, etc. However, students (especially young students) do not automatically know how to conduct meaningful research. Our modern students are used to Googling answers. They have grown accustomed to information being readily available. However, as academics, we know that research isn’t a  fast process. It’s slow and deliberate. As a teacher, I need to intentionally slow my students down during this exercise. I do this by breaking down a larger project into more manageable chunks and focusing on the process.

If you need to rapidly add some notes, text, highlights or arrows to a screenshot or a photo, there is no better and easier free tool that I know of than Evernote Skitch.

The newly released version 2.5 introduces full PDF annotation capabilities, and a great set of superuseful "visual stamps", that further enhance Skitch fast and elegant markup capabilities.

At its core Skitch is a super-handy image capture and editing utility that allows you to resize, crop, and add unique annotations and highlights to any image while allowing you to save and export in all major image file formats.

Skitch fully integrates with Evernote allowing you to automatically save all of your annotated images into one or more dedicated "notebooks".

Free to download and use.

Is the Internet making us dumber? (Nope, just different) | School Psychology Tech | Scoop.it

In Germany, scores increase by about 3 IQ points each decade. In fact, the tests have to be adjusted every few years to keep up.  The astonishing upward trend in IQ levels is known as the “Flynn effect,” named after American political scientist James Flynn…

Developing countries such as Kenya are also making gains. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, is making less progress — Flynn surmises this is because being subsidized by petrodollars provides little motivation for learning…

The fact that people are scoring progressively better on IQ tests, Flynn says, doesn’t represent better cognitive skills so much as it expresses a modern, scientifically influenced way of thinking that can better take hypothetical and abstract situations into account…

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, February 3, 12:17 PM

If you want to know what characterizes the new PowerPoint 2013 from the version you have been using unitl now, here is all you need to know.

Key new features you should be aware of:

  • Wide-screen friendly  There’s a 16:9 layout, and new themes designed to take advantage of widescreen possibilities.

  • Start an online meeting from within PowerPoint   Send out a link to the slides, or start a full-on Lync meeting that displays the deck with audio and IM. Your audience can join you from anywhere, on any device using Lync or the Office Presentation Service.

  • Improved audio and video   PowerPoint now supports more multimedia formats, such as .mp4 and .mov with H.264 video and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) audio, and more high-definition content. PowerPoint 2013 includes more built-in codecs so you don’t have to install them for certain file formats to work.

  • Touch device support

Now it’s possible to interact with PowerPoint on most any device including a Windows 8 PC. Using typical touch gestures, you can swipe, tap, scroll, zoom, and pan your way through your slides, and really feel the presentation.

  • Share & Save to the cloud   Save your Office files to your own SkyDrive or to your organization’s site. From there you can access and share your PowerPoint presentations and other Office files. You can even work together with your colleagues on the same file at the same time.

  • Use Presenter View on one monitor       Presenter View no longer requires multiple monitors. Now you can rehearse in Presenter View without hooking up anything else.

  • Zoom in on a slide    Click the magnifying glass to zoom in on charts, diagrams, or whatever you want to emphasize for your audience.

  • Theme variations   Themes now come with a set of variations, like different color palettes and font families. And, PowerPoint 2013 provides new widescreen themes along with standard sizes. Choose a theme and variant from the start screen or from the Design tab.

  • Jump to a slide    Use Slide Navigator to browse to other slides in the presentation.

  • Automatic set up    PowerPoint can automatically sense your computer setup and choose the right monitor for Presenter view.

Leadership Means Climbing The Mountain » Just Coach It-The 3Q Edge | School Psychology Tech | Scoop.it

Lead Forward! The call to climb the mountain has never been greater. If you listen, you will hear it.

Leadership is a trek around foggy corners, bluffs and terrain that challenges us beyond our wildest imagination; leading us where most people fear to tread. On good days, we move upward, forward and onward to new challenges, heights and accomplishments.

On bad days, we may slip, fall, lose our balance and tumble backward.  On all days, leadership means learning, re-learning and failing forward with faith, hope, courage, integrity and humanity.

===> It means leading forward. <===
