Parental misconceptions about concussions could hinder treatment and recovery - PsyPost

Jesse Gottesdiener's curator insight, October 14, 10:56 PM

From this article I learned about the misconceptions parents have about concussions. A lot of parents identified concussions as brain injuries but a few of them still let there kids continue to play after getting a concussion. I thought the statistics about the parents was interesting. I didn't know that reduced breathing rate was a symptom of a concussion. I selected this article because I know concussions are serious injuries and I wanted to learn more about them. This information will help me in the sport management industry because I will know more about concussions and how to treat them incase a player i'm working with gets one

Brett Fox's curator insight, October 15, 8:13 AM

I learned that many parents lack knowledge about concussions despite the talk about young players suffering from these mild brain injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 175,000 children are treated in U.S. emergency rooms each year for concussions due to sports-related activities. To ensure that children are diagnosed in a timely manner and receive the appropriate treatment, it is extremely important for parents to know about the signs and symptoms of concussions. I found it both interesting and surprising that in a survey that asked parents of children who recently had concussions about their head injury, only half of them could correctly identify a concussion as a brain injury that could lead to symptoms such as headache or difficulty concentrating. Only a quarter of them were aware of guidelines on when their child could return to sports and school work. I selected this article because I wanted to know how and why some parents fail to recognize if their child has a concussion. This will help me in the sport management industry because if I ever become an athletic trainer, I could educate the parents of athletes on concussions and how to recognize them.
