About this scoop

A collection of different school library websites identified by the web host they use. Most of these examples are towards the bottom of page 1 and on page 2.

More recently  I have added some sites to consider while you make basic decisions on design and layout.

Jan Radford's insight:

You will have some idea of what you want to do with your site, so look at these different websites to see which would suit you best.

Most platforms are free and all can be developed without knowing html.

Please contact me if you know of library sites that are using other platforms.

Free Website Builder | Make Your Own Website | Moonfruit

Free Website Builder | Make Your Own Website | Moonfruit | School library websites | Scoop.it
Make a free website or online shop with Moonfruit's free website builder. No coding skills needed and hosting included. Build a website today: it's easy.
Jan Radford's insight:

Check out   http://www.sp4il.co.uk/

Sarah says 'I really like MoonFruit as it is really easy to use and you can configure the screen as you like so you don't have to have the menu across the top. I just wanted something clean and simple and so chose the plain background but there are loads of other templates or you can upload your own. There's a good choice of fonts too. You can do quite a lot for free but there is a limit on the number of pages which is why on my training one I've put 2 courses on one page. You can upload quite a lot of pics too in the free version. The other thing that is good is it guides you through the metatags very easily so you get a good hit from search engines. It also has built in widgets to make linking to twitter etc pretty easy. It'd probably not as sophisticated as some eg Wordpress but easy and gets through the server blocks at school.'

Hidden Secrets Of Website Creation Made Simple! | ezkiidesign.com

Hidden Secrets Of Website Creation Made Simple! | ezkiidesign.com | School library websites | Scoop.it
Jan Radford's insight:

From this fairly complex posting:

'

If you’re aiming to host videos within your website, be sure to check with the web host to make sure that it is allowed. Many hosts do not allow for video hosting on their servers. FLV files usually take up more than their fair share of space, so make sure you’re allowed before you waste a lot of time.

Having white space (unused space) on your website is actually a great design feature, so do not make the mistake in thinking that you website should be packed all the way.'

Beware: WordPress alert
ComputerWeekly.com (blog)
Steps can be taken to help secure WordPress installations which ensure systems aren't compromised and that damage is minimised if a compromise does occur.
Jan Radford's insight:

For Wordpress users but this is a word of warning for everyone. Use obscure passwords and backup, backup, backup!.

Ask the question of your platform.  What happens if there is a major issue??  What backup and restore conditions do you have?

Also, what if I decide to move platforms (as may happen if your platform is barred by your network protocol).  Can I migrate my content?

Garfield High School - Library: Home | School library websites | Scoop.it
Garfield High School : Website
Jan Radford's insight:

No platform is given because this is a site which is embedded in the school site and utilises the school district software.  This is an option for many school libraries.  The issues can be the inability to update directly (and immediately), and site conventions that restrict limit choices.

Long form/shot form comment.

Note how short grabs of information are backed with explanations and lists that provide what students need.  The user can scan the site quickly, yet get detail when they need it.

Online Resources for Web Design Usability and User Experience Testing

Online Resources for Web Design Usability and User Experience Testing | School library websites | Scoop.it

User Experience (UX) testing is an essential part of a website redesign. The term UX refers to the ease with which your average visitor is able to use your website to achieve their goals based on a number of factors. These include:

Learnability — How easily new users are able to achieve their goals during a first visit to your website.Memorability —  is how easy it is for a user to come back to using your website after they have been away from it for a period of time.Efficiency — The speed with which users are able to complete unfamiliar tasks.Satisfaction — The extent users like the website redesign.Errors — The number of errors the average user makes and the severity of these errors, including how easily the user is able to recover.

If a website redesign falls short in any of the above, the likelihood of users returning to the site diminishes, particularly if they can access a similar site that offers the same tools and information with a more advanced user experience.

Running your own usability tests after a website redesign is one of the best ways to determine how users are interacting with your site and to pin-point where potential problems may lie. There are a number of resources online that offer usability testing services.

Via Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com
Jan Radford's insight:

When you are starting out, take time to consider these points from your target groups' point of view.  Be prepared to rethink your organisation on the basis of the feedback.  It is much easier to redesign while your site is still in its infancy.

Freyberg Library - Another Weebly site

Freyberg Library - Another Weebly site | School library websites | Scoop.it
Freyberg High School Library web pages: Palmerston Northcompetitions, hot reads, how to use the library, research links, etc...
Jan Radford's insight:

Another great example using Weebly.   Versatile and clear.  What a great introduction to this site.  Note the vision statement  is included and it ends with 'Use libraries Learn stuff'.  Visions are powerful.

It is also a simple site, so if you are just about to start out, this is very achievable.

How did I find it?  I was almost a foundation day pupil at Freyberg, back in the days before the grounds were laid and our parents despaired of all the mud we brought home!  I think there were 78 of us.

Jan Radford's insight:

Colourful, and free. Wix offers java and the opportunity to  create an extensive range of effects.  The templates are contemporary and attractive.

Can someone provide some first hand  feedback from Wix users to know how easy or reliable this platform is..  How easy to learn?  Are the templates free?

What are the limitations?  What issues?  Is it difficult for a novice to learn?

Please send me a message so I can edit this comment.

Long-form and short-form content

Something to consider

Jan Radford's insight:

Today there are a number of items on the Internet examining the future of long-form (books, blogs, videos.. ) compared with short items directed at you through Twitter, messaging etc.

Ever seen 'tl, dr'?  Too long, didnt read.

Be aware of this when adding content to your site.
