How School Libraries Are Staying Relevant | Livability

How School Libraries Are Staying Relevant | Livability | School Library Learning Commons | Scoop.it
Award-winning school libraries turn to technology to keep kids coming. Innovation turns these once-isolated book repositories into bustling hubs of learning – and fun.

Joyce Valenza's curator insight, May 12, 2014 9:15 PM

About Jennifer Jamison (NJ):

Today’s school librarians employ a variety of tools beyond books to educate kids. They use technology to engage students living in a tech-heavy world. They collaborate with teachers to support curriculum. They create “maker” spaces where students can work on arts and crafts projects. They maintain a flexible schedule, so kids can drop in when they wish. And they create a welcoming atmosphere that kids crave.

“This is the third place, the safe space to expand their knowledge,” Jamison says. “It’s free, it’s accessible, it’s comfortable. You can find friends here, kind of like Cheers – everybody knows your name.”

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014 | School Library Learning Commons | Scoop.it
The School Libraries section of the 2014 State of America's Libraries Report provides an overview of the top school library trends of the past year.
School libraries are at a critical point: Budget and testing pressures have led to decisions to eliminate or deprofessionalize school libraries, but the increased emphasis on college and career readiness and the integration of technology makes them more critical than ever. School librarians’ collaboration with other educators is key to literacy and imlementation of Common Core State Standards. The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking an advocacy campaign for school libraries that sets goals in five critical areas.

Muitos exames sobrepostos não substituem uma boa escola, e não há boas escolas que não exijam boas bibliotecas.
