School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014 | School Library Learning Commons | Scoop.it
The School Libraries section of the 2014 State of America's Libraries Report provides an overview of the top school library trends of the past year.
School libraries are at a critical point: Budget and testing pressures have led to decisions to eliminate or deprofessionalize school libraries, but the increased emphasis on college and career readiness and the integration of technology makes them more critical than ever. School librarians’ collaboration with other educators is key to literacy and imlementation of Common Core State Standards. The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking an advocacy campaign for school libraries that sets goals in five critical areas.

Muitos exames sobrepostos não substituem uma boa escola, e não há boas escolas que não exijam boas bibliotecas. Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library

Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library | School Library Learning Commons | Scoop.it

One of the most amazing transformations that has taken place at NMHS is the creation of the Makerspace in what was our traditional library.  A space that could once be compared to a barren wasteland is now a thriving learning metropolis where students flock to tinker, invent, create, collaborate, work, and most importantly, learn.  When I hired Laura I basically told her what her budget was and that she had complete control of how she wanted to use the money.  I could never have imagined how quickly she could radically transform this outdated space, using money that in the past had always been spent on books, magazines, and electronic databases.

14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools

14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools | School Library Learning Commons | Scoop.it
Carol Koechlin's insight:

"Libraries that only contain books and chess tables are obsolete.

A 21st century library should be at the heart of the school and a place where both students and staff can come in to relax, read, get advice, access powerful devices, edit videos, music, print in 3D and learn how to code to name a few. This 21st century learning space should give people an equal chance to use these devices and access information. Otherwise these libraries will turn into museums where people go to look at all the things we used to use."
