What Should a 21st-Century School Library Look Like?

What Should a 21st-Century School Library Look Like? | School Library Design Planning | Scoop.it
There’s an empty room at the REALM Charter School, which opened three years ago in an existing commercial building in Berkeley, Calif. When Emily Pilloton, director of the school’s Studio H design and build class, and Hallie Chen, an eighth-grade teacher, asked students what they envisioned for the space, they...

Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library

Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library | School Library Design Planning | Scoop.it

One of the most amazing transformations that has taken place at NMHS is the creation of the Makerspace in what was our traditional library.  A space that could once be compared to a barren wasteland is now a thriving learning metropolis where students flock to tinker, invent, create, collaborate, work, and most importantly, learn.  When I hired Laura I basically told her what her budget was and that she had complete control of how she wanted to use the money.  I could never have imagined how quickly she could radically transform this outdated space, using money that in the past had always been spent on books, magazines, and electronic databases.

There is a new digital divide on the horizon. It is not based around who has devices and who does not, but instead the new digital divide will be based around students who know how to effectively find and curate information and those who do not.

Library of future ready to open in Colorado Springs - Colorado Springs Gazette

Library of future ready to open in Colorado Springs - Colorado Springs Gazette | School Library Design Planning | Scoop.it

By Robin Intemann:

"When Library 21c, the Pikes Peak Library District's newest facility, opens next month, patrons will see more than a repository for stacks of material.
Read more at http://gazette.com/library-of-future-ready-to-open-in-colorado-springs/article/1520530#6pl3RhroDIgVRloj.99

The facility on the city's north side will promote experiential learning with the latest in technology, access to 3-D printers, sewing machines and other tools, plus space - lots and lots of space.

Traditional resources, including books, audio and visual media and e-books, will endure.

It will replace the nearby Briargate Library, which closed Sunday so that materials could be moved to the new building before its June 21 opening. The district's administrative offices also have moved to the new facility.

As libraries emerge as places to create and interact, PPLD, through Library 21c, is anticipating demands and desires, officials said.

"This is cutting edge," said Dee Vazquez Sabol, PPLD community engagement and outreach officer. "We have been planning for the past five years so we weren't struggling to catch up."

Library 21c is the first of its kind in the country, Sabol said. Several libraries around the country have similar components, but none has so many features that patrons can use in one place."

In the spring of 2011, Forsyth County Schools partnered with Dekalb Office to create a prototype for future media centers. The prototype was completed at Lambert High School. A goal of this project is to envision media centers for use in the 21st century where paper-based resources are not the predominant tool in a media center. Space to collaborate and work on projects has become the most important aspect of the 21st century media center.

If you are looking to do a renovation, there are so many beautiful ideas!!!

wildswans's curator insight, May 4, 2013 9:03 PM

Such wonderful ideas and sometimes all it takes is a few more curves and yet I find myself wondering, where is the balance between spaces carved out for physical play and those for imaginative play (in between the covers of a book). How do we divide the spaces such that children who want to play can play and others who want a place to hide and read can cuddle up in a cosy corner.
