School Library Thrives After Ditching Print Collection

School Library Thrives After Ditching Print Collection | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

“We used to think of a library as a building with stacks of books,” says Skinner, who has served as high school principal of the St. Louis Park, MN, Catholic preparatory school since 2007. “Now we should think of it as a space where people come together to share ideas, be creative, access information, and even read. Instead of thinking of it so literally, we should think of it as a more active space and evolving.”

Karen Bonanno's insight:

This quote from the principal sums up the role of the teacher librarian -- “I want someone who understands the role of a librarian as an instructional partner, an information specialist, a program administrator, and a school leader. I think the role and importance of a librarian and a media specialist is highly underrated. I am excited to get someone with a strong vision.”

Comparing school library perspectives - Principal's versus Librarian's

Comparing school library perspectives - Principal's versus Librarian's | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

This post reflects on Principal's perceptions of school librarians compared to how the librarians saw themselves in research conducted by Tricia Kuon and Holly Weimar.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

How does your principal demonstrate that he/she values you? In this post the following statement should encourage teacher librarians to take on board a bigger picture focus for the coming year - "The Principal's view is broader and management-focussed, the librarian's is narrower and task-focussed."

What does leadership mean?

What does leadership mean? | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

Leadership is not just a principal, superintendent or some other building-level or central office role. Leadership is found in our students, teachers and even our parents.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

Totally agree with this statement -"Being a leader in any setting is difficult. It’s not easy to go against the grain or share an opinion that may upset the apple cart. It is times like those where leaders need to surround themselves with a good network, whether that network is their PLN through Twitter or the colleagues around them who they trust. We need good leaders. Leaders with great ideas and strong voices."

DCPS should guarantee librarians in every school, task force recommends

DCPS should guarantee librarians in every school, task force recommends | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

All D.C. public schools should be guaranteed money to hire a librarian, according to a task force convened by Chancellor Kaya Henderson to make recommendations regarding school libraries.

Currently more than 50 DCPS schools have no librarian, a fact that has rankled parents, activists and D.C. Council Member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), who proposed legislation this fall to require one in every building.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

Let's hope the research evidence and the actions of parents and interested citizens bring about the change that is necessary for the public schools to be in a position to hire a qualified personnel.

Guidelines for Professional Library/Information Educational Programs - 2012 | IFLA | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

These guidelines replace the last significant revision in 2000 and incorporate the inclusion of material in library school curricula that reflects the developments in the provision of library and information services in the 21st century.  They set the framework for the necessary objectives for library and information educational programmes: the requirements of core and useful curriculum elements to be included in teaching programmes, the faculty, staff and student requirements for these programmes and the need for the programmes to be well supported by information and other resources.

A 21st Century Librarian Helps Students See Through the Cloud

A 21st Century Librarian Helps Students See Through the Cloud | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

Today’s librarians have to know things like responsible use policies (also known as acceptable use policies) and how to guide students in the effective use of the Internet for research. For schools trying to incorporate technology into the curriculum these educators are key, because they speak the language of technology and education.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

This one supports the need for teacher librarians to take on the digital literacy aspects of the curriculum, especially sourcing resources and information online.
