Using Wikipedia in information literacy instruction

As an information literacy instructor at Auburn University, it has been a perpetual struggle to teach students how to successfully search for library resources when they come to their one-time library sessions with only a broad paper topic and no idea how to narrow it down. A student recently told me regarding an English composition due in a few days, “The topic is so broad, I can’t pick an argument. I don’t even know where to start.” I began encouraging students to use a resource that they feel comfortable with as a starting point—Wikipedia.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

Start broad and chunk down - "Rather than shunning the site, its popularity can be used as a learning tool."

Elizabeth Hutchinson's curator insight, January 25, 8:41 AM

It is better to be positive about something that students use rather than negative. As long as they know the pitfalls it is a good place to start. Just not the place to stay!

Karen Draper's curator insight, January 29, 10:49 AM

This is what I teach my students-- get ideas from Wikipedia, use it as a jumping point. Make sure all info is backed up by primary & secondary sources.

Monica Crane-Gatto's curator insight, January 31, 11:39 PM

Using Wikipedia as a starting point can assist in narrowing a search that will lead into vetted databases research.

How Educators Around The World Are Implementing Mobile Learning (And What You Can Learn From Them) | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

"In less than a decade, mobile technology has spread to the furthest corners of the planet. Of the estimated 7 billion people on Earth, 6 billion now have access to a working mobile phone. Africa, which had a mobile penetration rate of just 5% in the 1990s, is now the second largest and fastest growing mobile phone market in the world, with a penetration rate of over 60% and climbing."

Peg with Pen: The Loss of Libraries and Librarians

Peg with Pen: The Loss of Libraries and Librarians | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

The subject of libraries is near and dear to my heart. In a second life I may come back as a librarian – if there are any libraries left.  My elementary school had a tiny little library; it was lovely.  I looked forward to checking out books every week – sometimes I checked out books that were big and fat - books I couldn’t read yet, but books that gave me great pleasure to carry around while I periodically turned the pages.
