Many schools lack libraries, librarians - Worcester Telegram

Many schools lack libraries, librarians - Worcester Telegram | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

“There is no state standard for school libraries,” said Katherine E. Lowe, executive director of the Lunenburg-based Massachusetts School Library Association. Her organization is hoping to change that on the state level and is working with state Rep. Sean P. Garballey, D-Arlington, who for the second time has filed a bill to create a commission to study the state of school libraries.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

An informative article - lobbying state government representatives is essential.

Librarians: Your Most Valuable MOOC Supporters

Librarians: Your Most Valuable MOOC Supporters | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it
Librarians are a major part of universities, but they're almost entirely missing from the MOOC conversation. That's a big mistake.

Libraries offer resources, from research to licensing support, that are essential to the future of MOOCs as they grow both in numbers and in seriousness. As MOOCs become an increasingly valid and valuable resource, it’s clear that they can benefit from another great educational resource: librarians.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

Connecting the Classroom and the Library: How One School Uses Web-Based Library Projects to Build Information-Literacy Skills

Connecting the Classroom and the Library: How One School Uses Web-Based Library Projects to Build Information-Literacy Skills | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

The first step we took in 1999 was to stop teaching isolated library skills classes. We began reinforcing information-literacy skills through class projects. At that time, we employed traditional strategies, including paper pathfinders and guided lab sessions.

The importance of instilling a need to read

The importance of instilling a need to read | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

Reading for pleasure at the age of 15 is a strong factor in determining future social mobility. Indeed, it has been revealed as the most important indicator of the future success of the child.

That was the startling finding of research carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on education and reading, and their role in promoting social mobility. It highlights why getting teenagers to read for pleasure is more than a sepia-tinted ambition for frustrated parents. It is a fundamental social issue.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

It goes without saying that reading needs to be encouraged from an early age as well.

Lucinda Scott-Kellermeier's curator insight, May 9, 6:14 AM

This article addresses UK reading issues, but the message relates to reading curriculum in any country. We need to anchor classic reading choices with contemporary literature reflecting 21st c. teen experiences and concerns.

"The mission of librarians, according to Lankes, is to “improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities.” I’d unpack that as saying librarians enable learning, which as any librarian will tell you is common practice. It’s so common, in fact, that we never seemed to notice. Now it’s the story we need to tell."

Yes teacher librarians are in the business of learning and learning to learn!

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's curator insight, May 8, 11:13 AM

Librarians have a multi-dimensional role to play in any organisation.  Literacy and technology are just part of a day's work,  it is all about integrating knowledge and helping patrons learn what works best for them.

What is a MOOC?

What is a MOOC? | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

No, a MOOC isn't a cow with a speech impediment, it's an acronym for Massively Open Online Course.

A MOOC is a course offered for free (though some places will charge a fee for accreditation) over the Internet to anyone on the planet (thus making it massive!).

Although the technology for offering MOOCs is still changing and developing, the idea of free, open, online courses is turning the world of higher education on its head.

Teacher librarians are too important to cut - Standard-Examiner

There have been good things happening in the Ogden School District. There is passion to see that students’ test scores improve and students graduate with the skills they will need for the work they do and the lives they will lead.

The primary purpose of the library media program is to empower students to be critical thinkers, make informed choices and be problem solvers. Dr. William A Sederburg, recently retired Utah Commissioner of Higher Education, said “Preserving and expanding school libraries are essential to our success in this information-intensive age. The school library isn’t your mother’s library anymore.”

Innovation Excellence | 25 Things Successful Educators Do Differently

Innovation Excellence | 25 Things Successful Educators Do Differently | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

"If you ask a student what makes him or her successful in school, you probably won’t hear about some fantastic new book or video lecture series. Most likely you will hear something like, “It was all Mr. Jones. He just never gave up on me.”

What students take away from a successful education usually centers on a personal connection with a teacher who instilled passion and inspiration for their subject. It’s difficult to measure success, and in the world of academia, educators are continually re-evaluating how to quantify learning. But the first and most important question to ask is: Are teachers reaching their students?"
