In May of last year, Ken Robinson–he of “Is School Killing Creativity”/TED Talk legend status–gave a brief talk on the idea of contrast, specifically the difference between who we are and how we teach.

 

His general message was that we, as human beings, are wired for certain tendencies. Three of those most immediate to education, Robinson explains, are our diversity, curiosity, and creativity, calling children “natural learners.”

 

He contrasted these hallmarks of being human with the tone in which public education in the United States currently operates–a tone that promotes conformity, compliance, and standardization.

As miners are alerted to dangers from noxious gases when a canary dies in the mine, community members should immediately wake up and take notice when budgets propose cutting school librarians. This is an early sign that the school culture is endangered, that access to information is at risk, and that student-centered learning may well be compromised.

 

School librarians are getting quite a bit of amount of attention lately. Education blogger Anthony Cody has written about scams rife in the corporate reform movement, citing librarians as an antidote to destructive policies. Education Activist Peggy Robertson addressed the critical importance of school librarians recently in her blog, Peg with Pen. In July Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis shared a post on Facebook about the bleeding loss of school librarians in Chicago. Under that post, I linked a comment to the Chicago Lab School where one can clearly note the rich school library programs present in schools of the, well, rich. Stories, literature, information literacy – all this matters to families of Lab students as “skills and dispositions learned through library use allow students to explore the wide range of human experience through a variety of media.” Shouldn’t this exploration of what it means to be human be available to public school students?

"In Mike FIsher and my keynote/workshop last week at the Wildly Excited Conference at the Grand Rapids State University in Michigan, I shared the following blended sketchnote (blended= self-drawn doodles/sketches combined with a photograph).  Participants were asked to take a look at the image and use the Visible Thinking Routine I see, I think, I wonder from Project Zero. They shared their thinking in a backchannel in a Today’s Meet room.

 

Before looking at my image annotations and reading the examples/ excerpt of the backchannel below with teachers’ responses, consider going through the exercise yourself. Take a few minutes to intensely look at the image above and follow the thinking routine: I see…, I think…, I wonder… Share your responses in the comment section below, adding your thoughts…sharing and making your thinking visible to other."

In trying to imagine what would be different if we did this instead of that, I was surprised at how education has settled one a small handful of models in light of so much possibility. Was it because we’ve found the magic formula, and in 2014 we’re in an era of simple refinement? That we know “what works,” and now it’s all a matter of tweaks?
