A Simple Comprehensive Guide on The use of Personal Learning Networks in Education

A Simple Comprehensive Guide on The use of Personal Learning Networks in Education | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

Personal Learning Networks, or PLNs, have been around for a long time. Originally they were your family, relatives and friends, or probably other educators and fellow teachers you work with in the same institution, but now and thanks to the development of web technologies and wireless connections, the concept of PLNs has been expanded to engulf people you have never met before in real world. Much of the learning nowadays takes place online and via a network of interconnected relations.

Here's Why You Should Be Fighting To Save Libraries | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it
The sounds of libraries today reveal the impact of libraries throughout our lives -- from the excited giggles of toddlers in storytimes to the "aha's!" of young people engaged in inquiry to the quiet conversations of senior citizens discove...
Karen Bonanno's insight:

All types of libraries -- school, public, and academic -- form a library ecosystem that provides and supports lifelong learning. Funding cuts to school libraries have an impact on public and academic libraries as students lack essential information literacy skills. Public and academic libraries have to adjust their core services to accommodate the need.

Libraries can be great places. They are human spaces with adults who help children in schools. It is more than the books, but they are important as well. They let us travel in our imagination.

Libraries are dying? Think again. | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

Despite enduring budget cutbacks and being forced to reinvent their services in the face of the ubiquitous Internet, public libraries remain staple institutions in various communities. There's been an increase in the use of public libraries in the U.S. over the past decade. Services such as public computers doubled in usage in the past 10 years, and libraries saw a circulation increase of 2.46 billion materials in 2010, the highest ever reported, according to a report by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

8 Technologies That Will Shape Future Classrooms

8 Technologies That Will Shape Future Classrooms | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

What does the future of learning hold? What will classrooms of the future be like? Emerging technologies such as cloud computing, augmented reality (AR) and 3D printing are paving the way for the future of education in ways we may have yet to see. At the very least though, we can extrapolate from what these promising technologies and predict how schools will adopt them in time to come.

Via Nik Peachey
Karen Bonanno's insight:

We are seeing some of these technologies now in schools, but maybe higher education places/spaces will be the leaders with a flow on effect to the schools. Regardless, it is still important to prepare our students for this transition.

To whom the bell tolls? To the governments to finance the education in a proper way and to foresee the need to modernize the processes at schools and to teachers to embrace the new technologies and let them go with the flow and learn how to adapt and use IT for meaningful purposes.

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014 | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it
The School Libraries section of the 2014 State of America's Libraries Report provides an overview of the top school library trends of the past year.
School libraries are at a critical point: Budget and testing pressures have led to decisions to eliminate or deprofessionalize school libraries, but the increased emphasis on college and career readiness and the integration of technology makes them more critical than ever. School librarians’ collaboration with other educators is key to literacy and imlementation of Common Core State Standards. The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking an advocacy campaign for school libraries that sets goals in five critical areas.
