Reading for pleasure at the age of 15 is a strong factor in determining future social mobility. Indeed, it has been revealed as the most important indicator of the future success of the child.
That was the startling finding of research carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on education and reading, and their role in promoting social mobility. It highlights why getting teenagers to read for pleasure is more than a sepia-tinted ambition for frustrated parents. It is a fundamental social issue.

"The mission of librarians, according to Lankes, is to “improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities.” I’d unpack that as saying librarians enable learning, which as any librarian will tell you is common practice. It’s so common, in fact, that we never seemed to notice. Now it’s the story we need to tell."
Yes teacher librarians are in the business of learning and learning to learn!

Over the past decade, the graphic novel genre has become one of the fastest-growing at libraries of all kinds, as a new generation of librarians adopts the category as a means to energize collections and boost circulation and patronage.

A MOOC is a course offered for free (though some places will charge a fee for accreditation) over the Internet to anyone on the planet (thus making it massive!).

Built largely for entertaining purposes by Apple, Apple TV is used increasingly in the classroom by educators who primarily want to take advantage of the mirroring capabilities of the device. For those who are not familiar with the term “mirroring”, simply put, a key feature in Apple devices called “AirPlay” can literally mirror or project your device’s screen (iPod/iPad/iPhone), via an LCD projector that is connected to the Apple TV. All you need aside from an Apple TV is an iPad 2 or newer, an LCD projector, and then, the sky is the limit.
Providing visual access to iBooks for all students with just one iPad in the classroom is, by itself, a reason for a teacher to buy an Apple TV.

I don't know where our family would be without Apple TV! It's a great source of entertainment and so easy to use. Right now, my children are watching a movie streamed through the iPad to the TV. This could be very useful in the classroom, when you want to share a video with the whole class. Delete the scoop?

There have been good things happening in the Ogden School District. There is passion to see that students’ test scores improve and students graduate with the skills they will need for the work they do and the lives they will lead. The primary purpose of the library media program is to empower students to be critical thinkers, make informed choices and be problem solvers. Dr. William A Sederburg, recently retired Utah Commissioner of Higher Education, said “Preserving and expanding school libraries are essential to our success in this information-intensive age. The Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA), Education Law Center (ELC) and Health Sciences Library Consortium were awarded a National Leadership research grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for this study. By analyzing the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA), which measures reading, writing, math, and science achievement for schoolchildren, this study determined that “reading and writing scores are better for students who have a full-time certified librarian than those who don’t.”

It is this statement that alerts me to the need to do this ... "When the study initially began, researchers discovered that many lawmakers were ignorant to the struggles facing school libraries in that many did not know that schools were not required to have libraries, while others were unaware of how quickly school library programs were being cut."
