Five key roles for 21st-century school librarians - eSchool News

Five key roles for 21st-century school librarians - eSchool News | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

According to Joyce Valenza, teacher librarian at Springfield Township High School in Pennsylvania and author of School Library Journal’s “Never Ending Search” blog, this is the golden age of librarianship.

Co-presenting a session at educational technology leader Alan November’s 2012 Building Learning Communities (BLC) conference on July 19 with Shannon McClintock Miller, district librarian and technology integration specialist at Van Meter Schools in Iowa, Valenza outlined five areas in which K-12 schools should turn to their librarians to empower learners with valuable 21st-century college and career readiness skills.

Manifesto for 21st Century Teacher Librarians | Teacher Librarian

Manifesto for 21st Century Teacher Librarians | Teacher Librarian | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

A couple of summers back a young school librarian, fresh out of library school, asked a very honest question at one of our state retreats:

We’re all doing different stuff. The other school librarians I know are not doing what I am doing. Some maintain Web sites and blogs; others do not. Some have seriously retooled; others have not. In the 21st century, what does a school librarian do?

Well into the 21st century, it is clear that the concept of modern teacher librarian practice is not clear. There is no textbook for what effective practice looks like in continually morphing information and communication landscapes.

With everything becoming available online we won't need librarians? | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

There have been many articles and blog posts lately debating the future of libraries. It is hard to imagine a school without one of these learning centers (where else would faculty meetings, testing, and baby showers take place?), but this post focuses on busting the myth that librarians will become obsolete.

Social media, social networking and school libraries - why bother?

Social media, social networking and school libraries - why bother? | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

Teacher librarians are involved with and responding to an information renaissance that is rewriting the world as we know it. A new generation of ‘social’ media technologies, like Twitter and Facebook, has made it much easier for people to:

use the web,

publish online,

interact with one another, and

share online resources.

In fact, social networking is creating a participatory medium that is changing the very nature of our professional connections, our community practices and the nature of learning interactions in these environments.

This webinar will explore social media to uncover:

what it is,

how we can use it, and

why it has become essential for teacher librarians to become professionally competent social media users

to be able learn, teach, and communicate in 21st century environments.

My role as the Teacher Librarian offered me the understanding and initiatives through the wide range of external TL PD and the opportunities in the job itself, to become the school's Learning Technologies Coordinator.I enjoyed this position for 5 years while the school staff went through a huge ICT learning curve! I retired in 2011 and subsequently was offered a part time professional position at another school training and inservicing staff to integrate learning technologies into their programs at the secondary school level.
