Flip This Library: School Libraries Need a Revolution

Flip This Library: School Libraries Need a Revolution | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

What has to happen for school libraries to become relevant? If we want to connect with the latest generation of learners and teachers, we have to totally redesign the library from the vantage point of our users—our thinking has to do a 180-degree flip. In short, it’s time for school libraries to become a lot less like Microsoft and a lot more like Google. With this notion in mind, David Loertscher, collaborated with two colleagues, Carol Koechlin and Sandi Zwaan, Canadian educational consultants, to develop an idea called the school library learning commons.

Limitless Libraries | A cooperative program of Nashville Public Library and Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Limitless Libraries | A cooperative program of Nashville Public Library and Metro Nashville Public Schools. | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

In 2009, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean asked Nashville Public Library to take the lead in a new partnership between the public and school libraries, with NPL recommending specific steps to improve the school libraries, to foster resource sharing between the two institutions, and to improve student access to learning materials. NPL was charged with collection development and purchasing for school libraries to meet state standards for volumes and quality of materials.

A pilot project with 3 high schools and a 9th grade academy began 2009. City funding was expanded to carry the program forward to all 16 area high schools in the 2010-2011 school year. The 2011-2012 school year brought more expansion to the program as it now includes 35 middle schools and 3 exceptional education schools.

Rethinking the Library to Improve Information Literacy

Rethinking the Library to Improve Information Literacy | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

"Many schools that have adopted a 1:1 program have made the mistake of forgetting the library. The library is the cornerstone of every school and is in a current state of flux. No one knows what to make of the library and some feel it is a relic in the context of schools. New information technologies emerge and the library is soon forgotten or pushed to the side, however, the library has never been more important."
