Surviving InfoWhelm: Information Fluency to the Rescue

Surviving InfoWhelm: Information Fluency to the Rescue | School Libraries for the Future | Scoop.it

The 21st Century Fluency Project’s stance on the importance of information fluency as a skill in the standard digital age survival toolbox applies to students, teachers, and everyday people just like you and me. It focuses on the skills we need by illustrating them in the 5 A’s—Ask, Acquire, Analyze, Apply, and Assess. We’ll use these as a foundation for strategies you can use to find what you’re really looking for in the age of InfoWhelm.

12 Things Students Should Never Do on Social Media

12 Things Students Should Never Do on Social Media | School Libraries for the Future | Scoop.it

The last thing young people want is another set of rules. But these days, social media comes with great responsibility. The fact is, irresponsible social media conduct could potentially ruin your education and negatively impact your career, not to mention hurt others in the process. (And we’re not just talking kids, either.) But most of those consequences are preventable, often with just a little foresight.

Teacher/Librarian Collaboration – From a Teacher's Perspective

The library is one of most the perfect places for “beyond the classroom learning.” It is the place where students are, or should be encouraged to explore other worlds, to develop their imagination, to think about the impossible. This process of inquiry is what makes learning a beautiful thing and this crucial step, “the jewel,” is something commonly missed when teachers plan a new unit of work. Sometimes we fail to go back to the basics. We replace simple words such as “finding out” and “enjoyment” with “success” and “assessment.” Often teachers can forget about the process and cast their eyes only to the outcome.

Curriculum Collaboration

Flipped classroom <>flipped school library

Flipped classroom <>flipped school library | School Libraries for the Future | Scoop.it

Flipping the classroom changes the place in which content is delivered. If the teacher assigns lecture-type, frontal instruction–in the form of video, simulations, slidecasts, readings, podcasts–as homework, then class time can be used interactively. The class becomes conversation space, creation space, space where teachers actively facilitate learning.

Flipping frees face-to-face classroom time for interactive and applied learning, activities that inspire critical thinking, exploration, inquiry, discussion, collaboration, problem solving.  So, the classroom and the library become more learner-centered.

Why Web Literacy Should Be Part of Every Education

Why Web Literacy Should Be Part of Every Education | School Libraries for the Future | Scoop.it
Like reading, writing, and arithmetic, web literacy is both content and activity. You don’t just learn “about” reading: you learn to read. You don’t just learn “about” arithmetic: you learn to count and calculate. You don’t just learn “about” the web: you learn to make your own website. As with these other three literacies, web literacy begins simply, with basics you can build upon. For some it can lead to a profession (i.e. becoming a computer programmer) while for most it becomes part of the conceptual DNA that helps you to understand and negotiate the world you live in.

Staff Development Ideas On This List: The 33 Digital Skills Every 21st Century Teacher should Have | School Libraries for the Future | Scoop.it

Every single teacher is concerned about his/ her teaching practices and the skills involved in this process. How many times have you wondered about a better way to teach the same lesson you have delivered to an eariler class? How often have you used technology to engage your students and improve their learning ? These are some recurring questions we keep regurgitating each time our teaching skills are put to the test.
