Anu Ojaranta's insight:

Great advocacy for school libraries!

From the text:

"First the basics. Number one: the Internet is a swamp of contradictory shit, advertising, and ‘ask anything’ forums with spectacularly misleading information. Much fiction is dressed up as fact. Teachers (remember I was one for eight years) spend half their time teaching pupils how to find reliable sources online (which, to be fair, is a vital life skill), but providing them with quality non-fiction books would have probably taught them more about the subject they were researching. Number two: librarians are experts."

Visibility Is A Synonym For Advocacy

"One of the most powerful advocacy weapons that librarians possess in their arsenal of visibility is one that is often overlooked; that is the tool creating a presence at school board meetings. A district-wide librarian presentation at a school board meeting provides the perfect vehicle for delivering an important message about the link between properly funded library programs, staffed by certified school librarians, and student achievement."

The need to shift and widen school library advocacy efforts - Gary Hartzell

"For more than twenty years, school librarians have focused the largest portion of their advocacy efforts on individual principals, superintendents, and board members, struggling to convince them that libraries should be integral and institutionalized elements of K-12 education. It hasn’t worked.
To do that librarians need to widen their advocacy efforts and give priority to two new targets: (1) the educational administration (Ed Ad) professors who shape beginning administrators’ perceptions and values and (2) the professional associations that have a powerful influence on how administrators approach their work challenges once they are in the field. In effect, this widening represents a shift from battling for current school leaders’ support to preemptively conditioning the next generation of administrators to support libraries as they take up their new responsibilities."

This is the direction that should be taken in Finland as well!
