Teacher/Librarian Collaboration – From a Teacher's Perspective

"The library is one of most the perfect places for beyond the classroom learning. It is the place where students are, or should be encouraged to explore other worlds, to develop their imagination, to think about the impossible. This process of inquiry is what makes learning a beautiful thing and this crucial step, the jewel, is something commonly missed when teachers plan a new unit of work. Sometimes we fail to go back to the basics. We replace simple words such as finding out and enjoyment with success and assessment. Often teachers can forget about the process and cast their eyes only to the outcome."

Sunsetting: What Libraries Can Learn from Tech Companies

Sunsetting: What Libraries Can Learn from Tech Companies | School libraries for information literacy and learning! | Scoop.it

Libraries exist to provide amazing services and resources to our users.  We are so committed to this vision that we continue to offer these services even after users don't need them.

“The easiest way to know that a product should be killed or sold off is when it no longer fits the company’s distinctive competence and market strategy. Regardless of the costs, a product that doesn’t make sense in the context of the rest of your products just confuses your customers.”

Finland’s school reforms won't scrap subjects altogether

Finland’s school reforms won't scrap subjects altogether | School libraries for information literacy and learning! | Scoop.it

"Finland’s plans to replace the teaching of classic school subjects such as history or English with broader, cross-cutting “topics” as part of a major education reform have been getting global attention, thanks to an article in The Independent, one of the UK’s trusted newspapers. Stay calm: despite the reforms, Finnish schools will continue to teach mathematics, history, arts, music and other subjects in the future."

Should Schools Still Teach Cursive?

Should Schools Still Teach Cursive? | School libraries for information literacy and learning! | Scoop.it
The decline in teaching cursive handwriting, the rise of the keyboard, and the introduction of the Common Core State Standards that do not require children to know cursive all question its relevance. Passionate advocates claim that cursive is a cultural tradition with cognitive and academic benefits that must be preserved, while some teachers and handwriting experts say the decline of cursive is natural, and it should be allowed to morph into a print/cursive hybrid, or bow out altogether.

Interesting research results cited here.  "The report went on to investigate commonalities such as the link between highly trained library staff and student success, digital adoption in the schools and book checkouts, and more. Interestingly, mobile device use and after-school access to the libraries’ digital materials played a key role in this year’s findings."
