Teacher/Librarian Collaboration – From a Teacher's Perspective

"The library is one of most the perfect places for beyond the classroom learning. It is the place where students are, or should be encouraged to explore other worlds, to develop their imagination, to think about the impossible. This process of inquiry is what makes learning a beautiful thing and this crucial step, the jewel, is something commonly missed when teachers plan a new unit of work. Sometimes we fail to go back to the basics. We replace simple words such as finding out and enjoyment with success and assessment. Often teachers can forget about the process and cast their eyes only to the outcome."

”1 av 5 européer har aldrig använt internet” | School libraries for information literacy and learning! | Scoop.it

In 1991, there were 176 certified librarians in Philadelphia public schools. This year there are 11 and only five are known to be actually doing what they were trained to do. Five librarians for the nation's eighth-largest school district.

Every school should have a full time qualified librarian. It is painful to see what happens when there is no-one to run the school library properly.

Dr. Laura Sheneman's curator insight, December 3, 4:53 PM

Wow - surprised at this answer.

"Here's a quiz. Which of the following are required by Pennsylvania to have libraries and certified librarians:

(a) barber and cosmetology schools,

(b) nursing programs,

(c) adult prisons,

(d) juvenile detention facilities,

(e) public schools?

The answer is all of them, except for public schools."

Now that many school libraries are evolving into media centers, the job of the school librarian, or media specialist, is changing as well.

This fall, Mobile County school officials began a pilot "digital literacy" program at 16 schools to revamp the media centers, and the duties of the librarians who run them.

Words Matter: Are you talking about technology, or are you talking about learning? | School libraries for information literacy and learning! | Scoop.it
This blog post was written by Krista Moroder, Professional Development Manager at Digital Promise and ISTE Young Educator Network Leader. ISTE is leading the theme Leadership for Change during Connected Educator Month. I still remember the first time I held a voluntary workshop on Google Docs for a staff of 100 teachers. I called it “10 Ways to Use Google Docs in Your Classroom”. Five people showed up. A week later, I was eating lunch in the staff lounge and heard a colleague say, “They always have an excuse for not turning their work in. They forgot to bring it home, they lost their flash drive, their printer wasn’t working, yada yada”. I immediately piped up: “You know, have you thought about using Google Docs? Their work is stored online, so they can access it from anywhere”. “OH! That’s great! Can you … More
