Librarians and media specialists can be the driving force for school change!

Deborah Rinio's curator insight, December 12, 2013 1:14 PM

In the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, library staff are often the front-line response for technical troubleshooting. Librarians also introduce teachers to new educational technology tools and strategies, help instruct students in those tools, and offer training to help both teachers and student improve their technology skills and know-how.

Anita Vance's curator insight, January 28, 6:19 PM

But what do we mean by 21st century education? Things are changing around us very dramatically, very quickly. The world is becoming more interconnected, the environment is becoming less stable, and technology is continuously altering our relationship to information. Changing global conditions demand that we rethink what, but even more important, how and where we learn. We need education for the 21st century.

Britt Smith's curator insight, December 7, 2013 6:51 AM

Awesome idea to motivate students to reach reading goals and continue to engage them in meaningful learning activities as part of the reward.  Essential for schools to continue to expose students to modern or new technologies while they are "in school."  Students who regress in terms of technology exposure while at school vs. home lose confidence in the credibility of technology instruction when the tools are antiquated.

Journal of Information Literacy: IL 40 years on

Journal of Information Literacy: IL 40 years on | School Libraries | Scoop.it

Quoted from the Editorial, by Jane Secker:

«As the year draws to a close many of us start to turn our thoughts to the New Year and 2014 will mark a milestone in the information literacy (IL) world. Next year will be 40 years since the coining of the phrase ‘information literacy’ by Paul Zurkowski (1974). As we approach this anniversary, it is worth reflecting on how IL has developed. For many people a 40th birthday is often a milestone, a signal we have reached a certain level of maturity and a time to reflect on where we are in our  lives. The 19th century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, speaking of life, said: "The first forty years of life give us the text: the next thirty supply the commentary." When a discipline reaches a 40-year anniversary it is surely only right to reflect on its history, to celebrate the achievements and be ambitious for its future. IL still feels like a relatively new field that is defining itself and battling for recognition; however, reading Zurkowski’s paper now, I have been struck by how little has changed (...)».

Want to hang out with a bunch of really smart people? Spend a day at a convention of school librarians. That's what I did on Friday, November 15 in Hartford, Connecticut at the biannual convention of the American Association of School Librarians. What makes them so smart? They are exemplars of what the Opening Session speaker, Tony Wagner, author of Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World, says the country needs if we are going to produce the many young innovators needed for our technology-driven new world order.
