The Need for the School Library

The Need for the School Library | School Libraries around the world | Scoop.it
According to an article written for the Voice of San Diego, many of the
libraries in public schools across the city are not staffed.  The reason
for this lack of staff comes from, suprise, lack of funding, but also from
union rules that state librarians, library assistants and techs cannot be
replaced by a volunteer or staff that would replace the job of the above
positions in any meaningful way.  This causes the great support structure a
school librarian can give to a classroom, helping not only in research for
the students but for information for teachers.

School Library Monthly - Research that Resonates: Influencing Stakeholders”

School Library Monthly - Research that Resonates: Influencing Stakeholders” | School Libraries around the world | Scoop.it
The library profession has strong evidence that students in schools with good school libraries learn more, achieve academic standards, and score higher on standardized tests than students in schools without school libraries and librarians. School librarians must seize the charge to use this body of research and master "messaging" strategies to create library advocates among school and community stakeholders and, hopefully, one or two school library champions.

For a teacher: "Co-teaching reduces your workload and provides students with more individualized instruction."For an administrator: "Studies have shown that school libraries can improve student test scores."For a parent: "The library program can help your teen become career and college ready."For a school board member: "It is difficult to help students achieve the reading targets without the kind of books that students want to read. The school library supports students' reading interests."For the curriculum coordinator: "When school librarians and teachers work together, they teach information skills, content, and Common Core standards all in one lesson or unit. Students learn more in a shortened amount of time and benefit from the expertise of two educators."To the Learning Support Coordinator: "The research shows that the reading and writing scores improve for struggling students—ELL, deficient readers, the disabled—when they use school libraries and are taught by a school librarian."

Remember: Building evidence of school library impact is dependent upon individual TL practitioners, not the researchers collecting the data!!!

School Libraries | State of America's Libraries Report 2014 | School Libraries around the world | Scoop.it
The School Libraries section of the 2014 State of America's Libraries Report provides an overview of the top school library trends of the past year.
School libraries are at a critical point: Budget and testing pressures have led to decisions to eliminate or deprofessionalize school libraries, but the increased emphasis on college and career readiness and the integration of technology makes them more critical than ever. School librarians’ collaboration with other educators is key to literacy and imlementation of Common Core State Standards. The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking an advocacy campaign for school libraries that sets goals in five critical areas.

lyn_hay's curator insight, April 15, 9:40 PM

The American Library Association has just released this year 'State of America's Libraries Report 2014'. While the whole report is a must-read for all information professionals, some of the trends and issues identified in this report highlight the significant contribution a school library and teacher librarian can make to student learning. It's quite sad to read about the power and potential of school libraries as transformative learning spaces, followed by increasing budget cuts that are gutting schools of their library and qualified library media specialists.

It just shows how important it is for every TL practitioner to collect, analyse and report on the evidence of their impact.

I particularly like ALA President, Barbara Stripling's suggestion for school library programs to focus on the five critical areas of literacy, inquiry, social and emotional growth, creativity and imagination, and thoughtful use of technology. I think this represents the TL profession's core business as information and learning leaders in schools.

Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library

Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library | School Libraries around the world | Scoop.it

One of the most amazing transformations that has taken place at NMHS is the creation of the Makerspace in what was our traditional library.  A space that could once be compared to a barren wasteland is now a thriving learning metropolis where students flock to tinker, invent, create, collaborate, work, and most importantly, learn.  When I hired Laura I basically told her what her budget was and that she had complete control of how she wanted to use the money.  I could never have imagined how quickly she could radically transform this outdated space, using money that in the past had always been spent on books, magazines, and electronic databases.
