European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL)

October 22-25, 2013,Istanbul,Turkey

ECIL is Organized by the Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University and Department of Information and Communication Sciences of Zagreb University. It is an international conference supported by Turkish National Commission for UNESCO, Information Literacy Section of IFLA and many other prestigious universities, associations, and organizations actively involved in media and information literacy.

 

Keynotes


Paul G. Zurkowski is the originator of the term "information literacy". He first used this term in 1974 in a proposal to the US National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. At the time he coined the term he was president of the Information Industry Association. His vision for information literacy skill development is not library centric, but advocates for a universal approach in its delivery across all trades, occupations and professions. Zurkowski views information literacy skills as a critical stepping stone in the creation of wealth, a key element for national economic development.

Dr Christine Bruce is Professor in theInformationSystemsSchool, Science and Engineering Faculty, QUT,Australia.  She has an extensive research and publication profile in information literacy and higher education teaching and learning. Dr. Bruce has a special focus on information literacy and learning. She regularly facilitates workshops and delivers speeches on information literacy. In 2010 Dr. Bruce received the Library Board of Queensland Award for her contributions to information literacy research and education.

 

Aim & Scope  


Information Literacy, Media Literacy and Lifelong Learning being the main theme, ECIL aims to bring together researchers, information professionals, media specialists, educators, policy makers, employers and all other related parties from around the world to exchange knowledge and experience and discuss current issues, recent developments, challenges, theories, and good practices.

Second Call: October 2012

Submission deadline for contributions: 1 February 2013

Notification of acceptance: 5 April 2013

Deadline for submitting final versions: 15 May 2013

Conference sessions: 22-24 October 2013

Conference tour: 25 October 2013

 

Abstarct & Paper Submission


The conference will be composed of several types of contributions, such as full papers, posters, PechaKucha, best practices, workshops, panels, special sessions, doctoral forum, each has different requirements and restrictions regarding the length, time allocation and content. Contributions should be prepared using the templates available through the Conference web site and submitted electronically via the conference management system by February 1, 2013. Contributions will be peer-reviewed and the authors will be notified of the outcome by April 5, 2013. Final copies of the accepted contributions should be sent in by May 15, 2013, in order for them to be included in the book of abstracts. Selected papers will be published in proceedings book and refereed journals. At least one of the authors should register online via Conference web site and take part at the conference.

If they do end up at that step, they should at least give proper credit to the owner of the image.

Hello everyone,

It is my very distinct pleasure to let you know that the Canadian Library Association's Leading Learning Project has been selected to receive the Ontario Library Association President's Award for Exceptional Achievement at our Super Conference in January 2015. The President's Award for Exceptional Achievement acknowledges an outstanding action or contribution that has in a major or unique way enhanced or furthered librarianship in Ontario. The selection is at the full discretion of the President of the OLA. Awards are only given if there is something of true historic significance to recognize.

The publication of Leading Learning: Standards of Practice for School Libraries in Canada is an event of true historic significance. As the document says, "Learners have a right to expect good school libraries in every school in Canada." Standards can indeed help measure practice, but Leading Learning does much more. By focusing on the needs of the learner, Leading Learning provides a framework for growth. Every school, no matter the status of its library program, can find itself in this framework and decide on tangible steps for improvement. The development of Leading Learning brought together input from every province and territory in the country, and successfully developed standards for growth that are meaningful within this very disparate context. This is a remarkable achievement.

The Royal Society of Canada's recently released expert panel report on the status and future of Canada's libraries and archives made recommendations for improving standards for school library programs across the country. It cited Leading Learning and our own guideline document, Together for Learning: School Libraries and the Emergence of the Learning Commons as models for moving forward. In the Ontario context, Leading Learning provides a sympathetic framework for achieving the vision of Together for Learning , and as such, is particularly deserving of an award for enhancing or furthering librarianship in this province. It is also my hope that this award will help to advance the implementation of Leading Learning across the country and advocate for school library programs, particularly in light of the RSC's recommendations.

You have received this email as leaders of the Canadian Library Association, members of the Leading Learning Project Steering Committee, and OLA members who served as members of the Project Focus Group and as Ontario Provincial Committee Chairpersons. We ask that you extend this good news to all of the many people involved in the project from across the country.

We have not, as yet, finalized plans for the presentation at Super Conference. I have copied this message to Shelagh Paterson, OLA Executive Director, and Beckie MacDonald, OLA Manager of Member Services. Beckie will be handling arrangements for awards, and will be in contact with you with more specific information about the presentation. While the award is for the project as a whole, we would like to recognize all of you who are planning to be at the conference at the award presentation.

From anecdotal evidence a similar situation exists in Australian schools. Limited access to ereading devices and infrastructure plus costs and ownership of ebooks contribute to slow growth. Also, is a downloadable PDF an ebook. I think not. Embedded interactivity is needed to create the uniqueness and flexibility in content delivery for students.

A century earlier, Kafka asserted in a memorable letter to his childhood friend that “a book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us.” Indeed, the question of what books do for the human soul and spirit stretches from ancient meditations to contemporary theories about the four psychological functions of reading. But hardly anyone has articulated the enchantment of literature more succinctly yet beautifully than C.S. Lewis, a man deeply invested in the authenticity of the written word.

This fall, Mobile County school officials began a pilot "digital literacy" program at 16 schools to revamp the media centers, and the duties of the librarians who run them.
