School libraries change lives. Cutting them would be disastrous | Lucy Ivison

School libraries change lives. Cutting them would be disastrous | Lucy Ivison | School Libraries around the world | Scoop.it
They empower and educate children, and help with social mobility. With public libraries also being closed, we need their school counterparts more than ever
Lourense Das's insight:
Those familiair with school libraries know how important they are. In this article the power of school libraries and their effect on children's lives is emphazised. One critical point: the article states that because of the closure of public libraries, school libraries are even more important. I would like to reply to that as follows: school libraries are special entities and have their own specific role in education. School libraries should always exist next to public libraries. It is a shame public libraries are closed but this is a problem in itself that should be dealt with.

Libraries are transforming to meet the needs of 21st Century users. This is certainly true of school libraries.Just ask Marge Cox, school librarian at Veterans Memorial Elementary School in Naples, Florida. “Today, the expectation is that instruction happens on a daily basis,” she said. “There is more interactivity.”She mentioned that the school libraries of today have Makerspace nights, online book clubs and game events. “I think if people haven’t been in a school media center lately, they really don’t have a true picture of a 21st century school library media center,” she said. However, she added, “Those events don’t happen without a full-time trained professional supported by assistants, volunteers, and the community.”
