Information Literacy Lesson: Evaluating Fake News Headlines

Information Literacy Lesson: Evaluating Fake News Headlines | School Libraries are Essential! | Scoop.it

As a former student of Rhetoric, and an avid satirical news writer and reader myself, I am fascinated by the information literacy issue surrounding fake news. Fake news aims to achieve three things: to entertain the reader, to provide commentary on a social or political issue, and to force readers to think critically about the information they consume.

Great tool and interesting classroom exercise to get students to think deeper and more critically about what the media shares. Not only an important part of learning, but a fun exercise as well.

This is an important topic - and not just to librarians. Many schools will need to re-evaluate their classes to include more embedded technology & ethics skills.

Maria João Loureiro's curator insight, February 1, 12:37 PM

It's vital we teach social networking skills in school | School Libraries are Essential! | Scoop.it
Social networking, especially via Twitter and Facebook, has become a major part in modern life for many millions of people. It therefore makes sense to show children how to use it wisely and how to get the best out of it – just as teachers and parents have always done with resources such as libraries and newspapers. Much better to guide and teach than to leave vulnerable children and teenagers to find out for themselves without warning them of the potential dangers, pitfalls and problems.

Teacher Librarians need to collaborate with teacher colleagues to embed Digital Citizenship into curriculum.
