Carolyn goes to the White House — @joycevalenza NeverEndingSearch | School Librarian As Building Leader | Scoop.it
Floyd Pentlin's insight:

Any one of us can lead–any teacher– any librarian–any administrator and any student, by believing that we individually have the power to make a difference and that we have a voice.  I believe that being a connected educator gives us that voice, amplifies that voice, and is a great democratizer.

The work we do is important, each of us.  So keep at it

On November 21, the White House will honor 10 connected educators—education leaders who creatively use technology to help kids learn—as “Champions of Change,” including classroom teachers, administrators, and one librarian, blogger and SLJ...
Floyd Pentlin's insight:

The honorees were selected from thousands of nominees, notes [Carolyn] Foote, district and high school librarian at Westlake High School in Austin, TX. According to the White House, Foote was chosen due to her role in helping to introduce the one-to-one use of tablet devices into her district, along with her professional development for teachers, the transformation of her school’s library into a technology and learning hub, and her advocacy work for students and teachers.

Glenda Ritz lacks background in leadership

Glenda Ritz lacks background in leadership | School Librarian As Building Leader | Scoop.it
Floyd Pentlin's insight:

From an op-ed piece which denigrates the leadership characteristics of school librarians. This points up the need for us to be front and center in leading education in our schools.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Instead, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: We are being led by a librarian (media specialist)! Nothing against librarians (media specialists), but I have had many of them work for me over the years while serving as a school administrator. They are, as a group, wonderful people! However, they are trained to do a certain type of job and “leading” is not what they are trained to do. Nor are they knowledgeable about administrative legal issues and consensus building.

I’ve done a bit of reading, but I haven’t seen any of the flipped educators discuss the role of their librarian in their practice.

But I see flipping as a serious sweet spot for the talents of librarians.

I want to flip but not sure how to start. How do I go about recording and demonstrating library research? Has anyone already had a go at this, I would love to see some examples.

Cindy Rogers's curator insight, November 6, 2013 11:52 PM

I watched my husband very successfully flip his classroom as an instructor.  As for me?  Suggestions for librarians were just what I needed.

Elizabeth Hutchinson's comment, November 15, 2013 2:38 AM
Maybe it is about time we librarians workout how to do this. If anyone wants to talk about how let me know. Not that I have any idea but talking about it may help point us in the right direction.

Floyd Pentlin's insight:

Since there aren’t many materials available in the languages of our school’s newest ELL students, it is difficult to locate English-language materials that are appropriate to high school students’ interests but that are on an extremely low reading level. We have found two series published by Saddeback, “Dark Man” and “Right Now!” to be most helpful in this area.

Floyd Pentlin's insight:

At Springfield Township High School Library in Glenside, PA, the portal does seem to have run amok. Librarian Joyce Valenza taps students to upload photos of Springfield life, including coverage of sports and school clubs events to the library's Flickr page and Pinterest board--the latter of which is tagged, "A collage of school culture." Student artwork is also archived on the library site, because, says Valenza, "The library curates student life and the students helped do it." Students set up Skype sessions with authors and poets through their virtual book club; they lead discussions during town-wide community reading events; they organize poetry slams; they post their school projects to the library's website in a Student Project Guide.

Integration of Information Literacy into the Curriculum: Changing Students’ Relationships with the School Librarian

Integration of Information Literacy into the Curriculum: Changing Students’ Relationships with the School Librarian | School Librarian As Building Leader | Scoop.it
Floyd Pentlin's insight:

Motivated by a shared inquiry question, a team of librarians at Deerfield High School (Illinois) gathered data to support a push to integrate information literacy skills into the curriculum, and developed a fruitful collaboration with other departments resulting in a co-taught Medieval narrative project. Among other important outcomes: a change in student perceptions about the role of school librarians.

Floyd Pentlin's insight:

At an Apple event last Thursday, the Spring Lake Park (MN) school superintendent stated that part of the success of his district's 1:1 initiative was replacing the school librarians with technology integration specialists. I didn't see too many eyebrows go up or hear any audible gasps when he said it. But anymore, I don't really expect such reactions.

Title talk: Librarian + What? Teacher? Facilitator? Curriculum Leader?

Title talk: Librarian + What? Teacher? Facilitator? Curriculum Leader? | School Librarian As Building Leader | Scoop.it
Facilitator? Curriculum Leader? Posted: October 14th, 2013 ˑ Filled under: School Libraries ˑ 4 Comments. The last time our school posted a library job, it asked for a Teacher-Librarian (TL).*This time it says we need a Library Facilitator.
Floyd Pentlin's insight:

How can one person “teach” 1,000 students?  They can’t.  At least not regularly.  Instead they must focus on developing teachers’ capacity (as a coach, modeling lessons and acting as a consultant) and learning resources (from pathfinders via Libguides to videos, podcasts, slide presentations), not to mention running a facility that is a learning space by default (the environment as the 3rd teacher), hosting events and initiatives.
