Helping Elementary Students Read for Information - ASCD

Helping Elementary Students Read for Information - ASCD | CCRS and Common Core | Scoop.it

To help students understand content-area reading, Nell K. Duke (2000), associate professor of teacher education and educational psychology at Michigan State University, recommends that educators increase students' access to informational texts, increase the time students spend working with informational texts during instructional activities, explicitly teach comprehension strategies, and create opportunities for students to use informational texts for authentic purposes.

Other important strategies for helping students understand informational texts include teaching them the structures and features used in informational texts and building students' academic vocabularies.
