Tons of Classroom Examples Using Augmented Reality

Tons of Classroom Examples Using Augmented Reality | School & Learning Today | Scoop.it

Augmented reality allows someone to add another layer to an existing image.  For example, imagine holding your phone over a poster on the wall as if you were going to take a photo of that poster, and then instantly a video starts playing to offer you additional information about that particular poster.  Pretty cool, right?  The first time it happens, it seems like magic.

Teach teachers how to create magic

Teach teachers how to create magic | School & Learning Today | Scoop.it
What do rap shows, barbershop banter and Sunday services have in common? As Christopher Emdin says, they all hold the secret magic to enthrall and teach at the same time — and it’s a skill we often don't teach to educators. The science advocate (and cofounder of Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S. with the GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan) offers a vision to make the classroom come alive.

Confusing Math Homework? Don’t Blame the Common Core

Confusing Math Homework? Don’t Blame the Common Core | School & Learning Today | Scoop.it

....  The Common Core is a set of “standards,” lists of competencies or skills that kids will need to know by the end of a given school year. Standards require what skills will be taught, while curriculum dictates other details such as how a given skill is conveyed to a second grader. For example, the Standards require second graders to know that “100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens—called a ‘hundred,’” but curriculum dictates the textbook, or teaching methodology, or philosophy used to teach that skill. The confusing math that has been coming home in our children’s backpacks is a result of Everyday Math, a curriculum based on critical thinking skills, (so-called “fuzzy math”) developed at the University of Chicago....more....

National Math + Science Initiative Blog | The Four Pillars of Flipping the Classroom | School & Learning Today | Scoop.it

Flipping the classroom has been a hot topic amongst circles in the education world recently – so much so that we even wrote an article about it ourselves! It is clear that teachers are excited about this different way of interacting and engaging with their students to generate new ideas and deepen their understanding.

Education Week picked up on this trend as well and hosted a brilliant webinar featuring two expert presenters – Todd Nesloney , a 5th grade math teacher, and Kristin Daniels, a board member of the Flipped Learning Network – on what flipping the classroom means for both students and teachers...more...

8 Tips for an Awesome Prezi

Via Baiba Svenca
more...
Dominique Ara-Zwahlen's curator insight, April 4, 12:06 AM

value added advice for beginners like me!

BI Media Specialists's curator insight, April 4, 4:48 AM
We have taught several Prezi classes this year. The students seem to love this tool and so do judges at media festival. The Prezis we turn in usually go far - we have 2 projects going on to the state competition next month! If you are looking for a great tool for your next lesson, consider Prezi!
Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, April 4, 6:25 PM

Prezi can be very effective but they are fundamentally based on creating perceptions of movement.  Estimates in WSJ that 25%-40% of population has motion sensitivity depending on the mode of transportation.  That may be simplistic but as a media psych prof, I have seen more than my share of over-exuberant Prezis whipping in and out and around such that I could barely make it through.  (Yes, I'm one of those 25%-40%ers)  So a word of caution to presenters.  If presentations are about your audience, keep in mind that restraint applies to more than the number of words per slide.  There are lots of ways to lose an audience.  None are good.  This is one of the worst.
