An Educator's Conference Perspective

If there is one thing that could be said of what I do professionally it might be that I do get around to many education conferences. This past month I attended two International conferences ISTE14, BLC14 and one Indiana regional conference, the Greater Clark County Schools Conference in Indiana. All of these conferences were outstanding in their offerings to educators. I usually comment on the structure and quality of the conferences, but today I think I need to address the educators who attend these conferences based on some recent observations. What set me to thinking about this post were two separate comments from very different educators...Read More....

A tenth-grader's lament: Classrooms need more technology, stat | Amplify | School & Learning Today | Scoop.it

Last year, my ninth-grade English teacher asked us to take notes about books we were reading in class. They were called “dialectical notes.” As we read, we were to write down important quotes or passages in one column of a notebook and write an observation in another column. You might think that that isn’t a big deal, but it was. 1984 is difficult enough without having to break every five minutes to write about sociopolitical implications, or whatever...Read More....

¿Por qué se siguen construyendo nuevas escuelas encapsuladas y con las sillas en filas indias. Después se atreven a llamarlas 'Escuelas del Siglo 21'...

Durriyyah Kemp's curator insight, July 29, 8:21 AM

It is important for educators to be very strategic concerning classroom design.  I reiterate this point to K-12 teachers often.  Remember, you're developing a learning environment that is inclusive of all students and is designed to engage all students.

Coding classes: Students, dogged teachers overcome obstacles to add computer science classes

Coding classes: Students, dogged teachers overcome obstacles to add computer science classes | School & Learning Today | Scoop.it
The Bay Area may incubate techno-innovation, but it’s fallen as flat as the rest of the country in one critical area: nurturing the next generation of cyber whizzes. Business and political leaders alike have harped on the need to teach kids computer programming and expand the traditional geek pool to include more girls, Latinos and African-Americans. From Oakland to Walnut Creek to San Jose, schools are introducing coding classes.
