A Job Description For Teaching

A rarely discussed weakness in education is the lack of a true job description for teachers in hiring. Being told that “you will teach US History” or “we are hiring you to be a 4th grade teacher” is not a job description. It doesn’t say what you are responsible for causing. It merely describes the content and level you will be teaching. It doesn’t demand that you achieve anything in particular. It only says that a certain slot and set of roles should be filled and certain content should be covered.

Most of this article is about inputs (learning outcomes) and outputs (student learning). They are important, however teaching is about having relationships with students and less about having relationships with the learning outcomes. It is a blending of instrumental work and communicative work.

States always had the option of adding up to 15% to the Standards, but many chose to adopt the CCSS as is. Now, they are doing the right thing by personalizing the Standards to the needs of students in their states.

Reviewing the Common Core Standards and making edits or additions as necessary based on the input of a knowledgeable citizenry is prudent, but is that the process or are the changes being made as knee-jerk reactions to political pressure and election fear? I don't really know...but from the headlines, the latter seems to be playing a hefty role in Common Core backlash.

In a high-stakes education environment, can schools afford the time investment required to build community relationships? "Schools cannot afford not to build such relationships. Leaders of today's community schools movement understand that education reform is not an 'either/or proposition,'" says Marty Blank, director of the Coalition of Community Schools (Blank, 2004, p. 62).

Research has shown a strong correlation between areas with high levels of poverty, crime, and mobility and low student achievement. Despite these challenges, studies also show that supportive neighborhoods can mitigate the harmful effects of economic disadvantage on students and form the foundation for high achievement (Holloway, 2004). Education reforms will have a limited effect if they focus solely on the classroom. Policymakers need to consider what research has shown to be true—what happens in the community can and will affect the teaching and learning that happens in schools.

In Making the Difference: Research and Practice in Community Schools, the Coalition for Community Schools (Blank, Melaville, & Shah, 2003) summarized the major findings from community school initiatives. It reports,

Significant and widespread gains in academic achievement and nonacademic development.Increased family stability and greater family involvement with schools.Increased teacher satisfaction and more positive school environments.Better use of school buildings and increased security and pride in neighborhoods.

 

In addition, in evaluations spanning from 1992, the Children's Aid Society (n.d.) finds that community schools

Improve student achievement;Increase parental involvement;Demonstrate higher student and teacher attendance;Improve school climate;Increase community engagement;Decrease special education referrals; andImprove mental and physical health for students.

A full-service community school (FSCS) or a community school in the United States focuses on partnerships between a school and its community. It integrates academics, youth development, family support, health and social services, and community development. How to get past your own defenses and learn to build a real relationship.

Love can be taught since it is a set of skills: "With love being so closely connected to meaning and fulfillment, it's valuable for each of us to define love as an action or series of actions we can take to bring us closer to the people we value.

"In a romantic context, some essential characteristics that fit the description of a loving relationship include:

Expressions of affection, both physical and emotional.

A wish to offer pleasure and satisfaction to another.

Tenderness, compassion, and sensitivity to the needs of the other.

A desire for shared activities and pursuits.

An appropriate level of sharing of possessions.

An ongoing, honest exchange of personal feelings.

The process of offering concern, comfort, and outward assistance for the loved one's aspirations."

 

Which of these skills do employees expect leadership to demonstrate? Which are  promoted as a "glue" between co-workers?

Dropping the "physical" from these descriptions and skills, what insights and connections do we find? What is the meaning of transparency in this context?

 

Here's another question: are employees asking for too much, expecting too much, from their work relationships and work environments? Are we looking for love in all the wrong places?

Even In An Age of Uncertainty, Managers Still Must Decide

Greg Satell: "Since 1960, the average lifespan on the S&P 500 has fallen from 60 years to less than 20 and fully 87% of the companies on the Fortune 500 in 1955 no longer exist."

 

This statement and material that explore similar statements belong in history lessons and business courses at the secondary school and college levels (and they probably are). Such statistics drive home the lessons of  VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity). 


Dismissal of VUCA is at the heart of some kinds of politics and political stances, but is also at the heart of the war against science and education. It is far from understood, in terms of education and the goals of education. VUCA is why educators need to promote resilience, the ability to adapt and to develop strategies, and should include approaches to design thinking, (open) systems thinking, critical thinking, and STEM fields where experimentation, modeling, and simulations can be used to solve problems. Problem solving should include the arts which promotes knowledge and insight from imagination and memory.

The same points can be made in other countries and jurisdictions i.e. Canada and Alberta. Politics is now ideology which pits people against people. It goes beyond process. We need to have authentic and thoughtful conversations and stop depending on failed and failing institutions. Politics is about people and their relationships, which includes daily life. Education, not School, is a great opportunity for children to learn how to live together.
