Using Humor in Business: Some Practical Advice

Using Humor in Business: Some Practical Advice | School Leadership, Leadership, in General, Tools and Resources, Advice and humor | Scoop.it
Is business the right place to be funny? Surely business is a serious place and humor doesn’t have a place in it? I disagree, I think humour is greatly underused in business today and can
Sharrock's insight:

Humor is a valuable asset. Colin Shaw makes some good points about humor as a way to become likeable when used appropriately. One thing about humor I think is that it is both smart and creative. You can't be funny about chemistry or physics without a knowledge about chemistry or physics. The same thing about accounting, politics, religion, or any other domain. Comedy is serious though, and can be perceived as a weapon. Colin is right to warn against directing the humor at others. Sometiems, it uncovers truths, explores customs, challenges authority and relationships of "sacred" ideas/concepts to "profane" ideas/concepts. I see some of the funniest comedians challenging the way we see ourselves in ways that are almost painful. They teach us to be more self-aware in a more global framework (how does this look to others? for example). The goal to accomplish such "awareness of self" as criticism might not go over well on a one to one basis or in small, intimate groups. There's something about "the Stage" that allows for such...approaches to hard truths and judgments. We need to be aware that stand-up routines have a different context. Directing humorous critiques at yourself rather than at others is a way to be likeable while also communicating that you have a sharp mind and you know how to use it.

The funny thing about war humor is the aftertaste. Some jokes are both true and painful. They are painfully true. And this is how political humor should be.

The Legal Ramifications of a Bomb Threat

The Legal Ramifications of a Bomb Threat | School Leadership, Leadership, in General, Tools and Resources, Advice and humor | Scoop.it
Threats at work or school cause real panic -- hoax or not. As a result, perpetrators can face real legal consequences.

Criminal charges or not, any student playing such a prank will end up with a permanently tarnished academic record. And youngsters aren’t exempt: kids under 18 can still be tried as an adult in most states, depending on the seriousness of the crime and the judge’s discretion. Youngsters playing pranks could face juvenile detention or other penalties. Parents should make children aware of the ramifications of such pranks or actual threats.

Sharrock's insight:

We should explore ways to instruct students regarding the consequences of hoaxes and pranks. Students often have few experiences interacting with local or federal law enforcement, so may not have a clear sense of the seriousness of some of their actions. Apparently, some adults do not have this clear sense as well.

Excerpt:

In some states, a conviction under a state or federal charge for making a school bomb threat can also:

Get a student’s drivers license or learner’s permit revoked,Make parents liable for their child’s actions in civil court, andResult in an automatic suspension from public school.

Top 10 Political Comedians

Top 10 Political Comedians | School Leadership, Leadership, in General, Tools and Resources, Advice and humor | Scoop.it
Top 10 Political Comedians - Check out this list of the 10 best political stand-up comedians, from Bill Maher to Dennis Miller.

It might seem like political comedians have an easy job -- to take shots at leaders and bureaucrats for whom the public at large already have a healthy dose of cynical mistrust. But the best political comedians do more than take shots; they shape the discussion and become part of the process through the act of telling jokes. They can be more than simple commentators; they can be voices. Funny, funny voices.

Though the majority of political comedians do tend to lean left, there are those who speak to conservatives and others who elect not to choose sides. All are represented here, in varying numbers and degrees.

Sharrock's insight:

More celebrity comedians should be involved with social media influencing. Comedians as a profession have repeatedly clarified complex issues: politics, social customs/tendencies, business environments, competition, etc. We laugh because something said was devastatingly true or emotionally accurate. Also, Conan is a manager. He makes decisions under high-stress situations. He has to interact with writers, his producer(s), network executives. He's not on the "outside" looking in. He's just able to make money for his tv network, keep people employed, entertain an audience, while keeping his sense of humor.

But political comedians already influence us. We know Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Gary Trudeau (Doonesbury), Scott Adams (Dilbert), Bill Maher, and others listed here http://comedians.about.com/od/top10lists/tp/top10politicalcomedians.htm. There are others who are not listed at that link. Some of their influence only works from their chosen medium, but some of those listed are exceptionally capable of off-the-cuff, live, intellectual contributions that either create the news or they make people take action. For example, how often does a manager or supervisor use Dilbert comic strip to avoid becoming one of the characters depicted there? How often does a comic quote get used?
