Why So Many Diversity Programs Fail

Why So Many Diversity Programs Fail | School Leadership, Leadership, in General, Tools and Resources, Advice and humor | Scoop.it
Hiring tests don’t really solve the diversity problem, either, for some of the same reasons. In theory, skills-based testing is designed to level the playing field and let the best candidate shine. But managers didn’t appreciate being told to hire someone they didn’t hand select. Dobbin and Kalev also found that some companies were only giving the tests to people they didn’t want to hire, i.e. under-represented minorities. Or, they just ignored the results in favor of picking who they wanted.

Sharrock's insight:
School districts should consider this research and its findings. The tech industry is being noticed now in the public, but education also has the diversity issue, especially in leadership positions, but also in the learner leadership positions (teaching/educator).

The Great Transformation - Lead Article for 2014 Drucker Forum

The article is intended to provide the backdrop for the 2014 Global Peter Drucker Forum in Vienna. It deals with the challenges and opportunities for management in the face of the gigantic changes that we are experiencing in our society. Technology is a game changer - yet it will lead down the wrong path if not accompanied the appreciation of the essence of what it means to be human. Humanist leaders must provide the context and grounding for a society that is in danger to become increasingly technology obsessed. Hence the call for a 2nd Renaissance.

There are immense possibilities for greater and wider-spread change with the use of present-day technological advancements, as well as with the implementation of innovative educational programs. The challenge is to ensure that innovation plays a constructive role in improving educational opportunities for billions of people who remain under-served in a rapidly developing world.

How to Block Access to Adult Content & Websites on iPhone & iPad

How to Block Access to Adult Content & Websites on iPhone & iPad | School Leadership, Leadership, in General, Tools and Resources, Advice and humor | Scoop.it

"Apple has long included various means of placing parental controls and filtering for content available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but up until recent iOS updates there was not a simple method of blocking web-based adult content and material in Safari. That has changed with iOS 7, which makes it extremely easy to prevent access to adult themed web sites and general content that is deemed inappropriate for youth. The web restrictions are very easy to toggle on and off and access to them is password restricted, which makes it perfect to quickly turn on before handing an iOS device off to a youngin’ for unsupervised use."

How the Chemical Industry Can Find Employees

How the Chemical Industry Can Find Employees | School Leadership, Leadership, in General, Tools and Resources, Advice and humor | Scoop.it
One way to draw talent is to train videogame-savvy college students about operating chemical plants—by letting them play videogames that simulate the job.
Sharrock's insight:

from the article: "The Avestar project—for Advanced Virtual Energy Simulation Training and Research—is now being tested at West Virginia University, and the backers hope to bring it to other schools. Students put on glasses to see images on their screens in 3-D, and they maneuver through the virtual chemical plant using a game pad—something like the controller for a gaming console— to get a feel for how everything works."

Getting close to rigorous online evaluations for employment. Imagine getting "digital badges" or some of credential as a result of successful completions.

(excerpt) "Why should you care? Maybe you’re ... a social media user who thinks the data you generate might be worth something—to you. Even as we write, innovators are building blockchain-based applications that serve these ends. And they are just the beginning. "...How about these billions of connected smart things that will be sensing, responding, sharing data, generating and trading their own electricity, protecting our environment, managing our homes and our health? And this Internet of Everything will need a Ledger of Everything."

If you are looking for a bird's eye view on what alternative collaboration tools are now available for different kind of projects and purposes, I do have what you are looking for.

The new Best Online Collaboration Tools 2014 directory is now public. It contains over 370 collaboration tools organized in over 25 different categories ranging from video-conferencing to screen-sharing, collaborative reviewing and many more.

The tools listed have all been checked and verified and represent my own personal census on what is available today for each one of the categories listed. There is no attempt (yet) to provide individual evaluations or recommendations, though I have tried to subjectively rank tools in each category according to their value and importance.

The directory is updated weekly.

New suggestions, comments and request for revisions and changes are highly welcome.

Technology: More than a tool, a new skill | The Thinking Stick | School Leadership, Leadership, in General, Tools and Resources, Advice and humor | Scoop.it

I have heard this said way too often-to the point, I believe, that some educators are using it to hide behind when it comes to using technology in their classrooms.

Is Technology a tool? Yes.

Is it JUST a tool? No.

Sharrock's insight:

from the article: "The skills I’m talking about are skills of organization, of building research systems, and meta-cognition. Skills that go beyond the tools and deep into the learning process."

See the best new ideas in computer graphics and interaction from last week’s Siggraph conference.
Sharrock's insight:

The "Face Replacer" can be used for more than just games. Imagine your avatar fully replacing the "real you"  when video chatting. Maybe you can spoof real people though, like personal friends or frenemies, famous actors, trademarked/copyrighted cartoon characters. Possibilites abound for harassment, comedy, drama, abuse, etc. So much possibility; so much danger. Could put lawyers to work in new ways though, and may open new businesses to establish identities, develop alibis for social as well as corporate connections, etc.

Can't wait for how education law will handle this. At whose door will the cost of digital forensics services get laid? Get ready for the blogs and articles about when comedy leads to suicide and violence.
