7 Pillars Of Digital Leadership In Education - TeachThought

7 Pillars Of Digital Leadership In Education - TeachThought | School Info Lit Champions | Scoop.it

"As schools change leadership must as well.

With society becoming more and more reliant on technology it is incumbent upon leaders to harness the power of digital technologies in order to create school cultures that are transparent, relevant, meaningful, engaging, and inspiring. In order to set the stage for increasing achievement and to establish a greater sense of community pride for the work being done in our schools, we must begin to change the way we lead. To do this, leaders must understand the origins of fear and misconceptions that often surround the use of technology such as social media and mobile devices."

Having to earn a digital passport or badge before you can get access to email or laptops/tablets in school is a great way of spreading the digital citizenship message and making sure everyone has had the same standard of training. This would be useful approach across all sectors, not just primary.

Digital Passport™ : a game to become #digitalliterate #mediawijsheid

Deborah Fillman's curator insight, November 6, 2013 5:06 PM

Love the idea of teaching kids digital "self-defense," rather than focusing on erecting barriers they might see as challenges to overcome, or "problems" to solve. They not only need to guard against bullies and predators, but also that  that they have a "digital footprint" that will follow them throughout their lives.

Tina Jameson's curator insight, November 7, 2013 5:07 PM

Prepare students for their online future: this freely available online tool allows students to 'play' and work their way through different levels, building up vital understanding of 'digital footprints' and cyber safety in the process.  Seems to be aimed at a junior primary to middle school level.

This article explains how one Librarian has used the tool successfully, and provides links to the 'Digital Passport' program.

Llandrillo Library's insight:

The SLA are currently discussing the possibilty of managing and supporting the School IL champions network after Phase IV of the WILP ends in March 2014. The SLA have had a presence on the steering group since the beginning of the project and would be well placed to advocate for IL being embedded in the curriculum. Their communications network and links with CILIP Schools Library Group would also help to extend the reach of IL awareness and best practice sharing. Our own project officer Gina Maddison has also been asked to join the committee of the CILIP Youth Libraries Group, further extending the reach of the IL message and helping to contextualise it's benefits to all ages of learners.

Digital literacy 'as important as reading and writing' - Telegraph | School Info Lit Champions | Scoop.it
Considering the importance placed on digital literacy in many career roles, the new 2014 curriculum seems a step in the right direction – but does more still need to be done?
Llandrillo Library's insight:

Embedding digital literacy lessons and, furthermore, social media across the curriculum certainly opens up a variety of educational tools for teachers.

In a recent survey conducted by Pearson, figures suggest that around one in six 15 year olds use social media for careers advice, while only 1 per cent of 15 year olds prioritise information from careers books.

Flippity is a good tool that practitioners and or their learners can use to create flashcards for any number of topics.
Flippity...
- is a free tool for creating flashcards from data in a Google Spreadsheet.
- provides clear directions for the simple steps to take to create the flashcards.
To create flashcards use the Flippity template, enter the data, publish the spreadsheet to the web, then grab the Flippity link.
The Flippity link will take users to a Flippity page on which practitioners and their learners can flip through the flashcards. Flippity also includes a shuffle function and an option to remove cards from your deck of flashcards as users flip through them.
