All About Explorers | About This Site

Llandrillo Library's insight:

link shared by @LibGoddess on Twitter :

All About Explorers was developed by a group of teachers as a means of teaching students about the Internet. Although the Internet can be a tremendous resource for gathering information about a topic, we found that students often did not have the skills to discern useful information from worthless data.

So we set out to develop a series of lessons for elementary age students in which we would demonstrate that just because it is out there for the searching does not mean it is worthwhile.

Digital skills as important as numeracy and literacy, says IT leader - IDEA Center

ICE Worldwide, LLC is a global legal, marketing, business development and investor relations firm with offices in Boston, Singapore and Japan.
Llandrillo Library's insight:

"Understanding how the web works is a fundamental right for every person living in the twenty-first century, and digital literacy must be as core an area of study in schools as literacy and numeracy.

“Too often, a culture of caution exists in society meaning children are being taught to fear the internet rather than understand it. We need to teach kids basic programming skills to get them into jobs that will boost the economy"

Llandrillo Library's insight:

Our Information Officer Síona is VERY excited about going to Google Dublin HQ for the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) European Conference......maybe a little too excited. The keynote speakers are excellent and there will be lot to reflect on, especially in relation to changing Digital Literacy Skills and our responsibilities in providing access and training for learners to become active and responsible citizens online. Look out for live tweets from the event and no doubt many pictures of Tayto Crisps and Kimberley biscuits - access to which she tell us is a basic human right. Hmmmm......

Should university students use Wikipedia?

Should university students use Wikipedia? | School Info Lit Champions | Scoop.it
Most academics look down on the open source encyclopedia, but does it really hinder students' studies?
Llandrillo Library's insight:

Dr Catherine Easton says "students must develop an ability to analyse the nature of the source material within Wikipedia, adding that the educator should ensure there is "a strong, continuing focus on the need to support academic work with references to acceptable scholarly sources".

How do we help our learners develop these skills? Do tutors and library staff work together in your institution to support learners in this way?
