Stop Exploring 'Innovative Education Models', We Need Action Now

Stop Exploring 'Innovative Education Models', We Need Action Now | School Design | Scoop.it

I've recently been drawn to a slew of impassioned posts from several strong voices in education, each managing more than the last to confirm we're headed towards a defining moment in the history of our schools: a shift from an exploration of more effective models of teaching and learning, to an ethical imperative to implement them in our schools. Boston wants public’s help to imagine high schools of the future - The Boston Globe | School Design | Scoop.it
The nation’s first high school opened in Boston in 1821 and now nearly two centuries later the city has launched an effort to reinvent high school for the future.
Antonia Rudenstine's insight:

So great that Boston wants to think about high school in new ways...one of the first times I've seen an urban district say that they can imagine adolescents in brick and mortar schools only 30-60% of the time. Looking forward to seeing what develops.

How To Design The Googleplex Of Schools ~ Fast Company ~ by John Brownlee

How To Design The Googleplex Of Schools ~ Fast Company ~ by John Brownlee | School Design | Scoop.it
When the city of Alexandria, Minnesota, asked community members what they wanted in their new high school to be like, they replied, "like the Google campus." So they hired John Pfluger of Cuningham Group Architecture to make that a reality. Something that might not be the same size, or even necessarily have the exact design considerations, but that represents the same sense of possibility—the feeling of being adaptable to the future, whatever might come of it. The result is a state-of-the-art facility for more than 1,400 students where the word "classroom" is verboten, and where an hour in algebra class might be indiscernible from kicking back in the quad.

What Does Your Classroom Look Like? Design Matters, Say Researchers

What Does Your Classroom Look Like? Design Matters, Say Researchers | School Design | Scoop.it
A new report finds that simple factors like classroom lighting and use of color can have a significant impact on student performance.
Antonia Rudenstine's insight:

Documents an interesting research study on the design of individual classrooms and their effect on student performance (most studies have focused on whole school designs). This report shows that classrooms with stimulation, individualization, and "naturalness" (air quality, natural light, good temperature) are best for students.Key features of stimulation and individualization: student ownership, flexible space and use of color are all important.

None
Antonia Rudenstine's insight:

I "scooped" Minerva Schools (post-secondary institutions) a while ago. Here they are profiled in The Atlantic as part of an exploration of the Future of College. The piece describes some of the key issues with higher-ed. that Minerva is designed to take apart: there are no lectures at Minerva, classes are capped at 19, tuition is comparatively very affordable, and there is no Federal Funding with all of the strings that it attaches. Fascinating.

Meet The Classroom Of The Future

Meet The Classroom Of The Future | School Design | Scoop.it
When a computer runs a classroom, is it more efficient? Do kids learn more? A middle school in New York is finding out.
Antonia Rudenstine's insight:

Fascinating conception of blended learning: a computer analyzes student progress from day to day and identifies what students should work on next (and where they should sit so that the staff will be able to support them). It's too much like test-prep for my taste, but I'm thinking of this as an initial iteration which could become something dynamic over the next few years.
