South African township's solar-powered cafe

South African township's solar-powered cafe | scatol8® | Scoop.it
Entrepreneur converts shipping container into mobile internet shop powered entirely by the sun.

This 2-minute video shows how a an enterpreneur has made his business (an internet cafe) self-sufficient, not relying much on external infrastruture.  Modern Africa has advanced beyond what many in the developed world acknowledge and is beyond some the old stereotypes of that characterize how people view the 'Dark Continent.'

This shop is awesome. Good for him opening this up randomly, from security guard to owning a solar powered cafe. It gives children the opportunity to become more familiar with the internet and how to use it. What a great idea.
Lauren Stahowiak's curator insight, March 17, 2014 5:59 PM

In South Africa, a shipping container is transformed into a mobile internet shop reliant on solar power. While the rest of the world is much more advanced in technology, this shows how non-advanced countries are trying to catch up!

VISION: Planning a smart city, towards an integration of urban policies

31/10/2012 -  Italian smart city award - Premiazione /follows Prize-giving Ceremony -

Introductive keynote by Iñigo de la Serna

The different dimensions of smart cities: governance, institutional structures, technologies, environmental sustainability, social cohesion and inclusion, education must be integrated into a comprehensive view of urban policies.

The Closing Plenary will provide  the opportunity to reflect upon key findings that emerged from the SCE three days and help define the roadmap to an open and holistic way of thinking the city, keeping in mind the inter-ministerial Committee for Urban policies newly established. As main representatives of this joint effort to develop smart cities, the Ministers Barca and Ciaccia, the Presidents of ANCI, Conference of the Regions, ReCS-network of Strategic Cities, ISTAT, National Institute of Urbanism, politicians and experts, have been invited.

Sustainable Architecture: The International Style of the 21st Century

Sustainable Architecture: The International Style of the 21st Century | scatol8® | Scoop.it

Sustainability is defined as our ability to meet our present needs without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their own. The three Es (Economy, Ecology, and Equality) and the three Ps (People, Planet, Profit) are simple guides for sustainability as a consideration in decision-making.

These ideals can combine with 3 current pillars of architecture to come up with a new series of precepts: program, economy, operation, and harmony.

-Program describes the purpose of the building and its ability to carry out that function for the ease and comfort of those who would inhabit it. It is most concerned with people and the human element of the architectural experience.

-Economy speaks to the ability of a building to stand and is concerned primarily with its production and use of materials both physical and nonphysical. It is most concerned with the component parts of that which makes up a building and minimizing waste.

-Operation is all about the performance of a building in all of the non-human aspects, such as light, air, water, and energy. Economy and operation are strongly related and are opposite sides of the same coin; one has profound effects on the other.

-Finally, harmony is an expression of the building as a whole and how well it relates to itself, the world around it, and those who use it. It is the most subjective of the pillars and is mostly aesthetic. Similar to the relationship of economy to operation, harmony is the reciprocal of program; one is the consideration of the building unto itself, the other the consideration of the building unto the world...

In the weeks to come, these four pillars will be covered in more depth looking at the theoretical, practical, and technological ins and outs of Sustainable architecture- the International Style of the 21st century.

Sustainable Architecture: The International Style of the 21st Century
Jemma Tanner's curator insight, October 28, 2013 11:32 PM

This article gave me an idea for a design task activity consisting of making your own sustainable building. If I were to ever create this activity I'd probably find an old building in the city that was going to be knocked down and create a story that the students had to design the replacement. I'd give criteria based around sustainable practices as well as what functions the building must have. The main focus I'd give them would be that the building needs to meet the needs of the residents without compromising future generations. From this resource I would take the three Ps mention - Purpose (does it fulfill the purpose for which it was designed), Physical (does it achieve the physical requirements given) and Pleasing (does it look good). If I really wanted to extend this task I could create a budget for the building in which the students would have to manage during its creation. I'd definitely do this as a group task because collaboration between students always generates more ideas.

Recycled Paper Bead Necklace

Recycled Paper Bead Necklace | scatol8® | Scoop.it

The gorgeous coloured beads in this Fair Trade necklace are made by women in Uganda who roll glossy paper from old magazines to make each bead, varnish the beads, and then turn them into beautiful jewellery.

Made by the women of the Kind Mothers Project, an association which was initiated by eight Ugandan mothers who felt touched by the plight of children living under difficult conditions in their country. They realized many children were in dire need of help and they wanted to make a contribution towards improving the situation of these unfortunate and vulnerable children, and help to improve their lives. The money raised from the sale of this hand crafted jewellery helps provide education and better future for these children

RFID Circle Event: DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION: The Internet of Things & Long-range RFID + Sensors -Improving the Retail Flow of Goods

Range matters! Tag size matters! Sensing often matters! All at a very low cost!

TODAY’S PROBLEM: Humans manually collect visibility data – it should be automatic! Data on the Internet has been largely created by human beings—typing, bar code scans, digital photos and more. Initial deployments of RFID solutions have relied heavily upon human intervention. Manual data collection is very time consuming and prone to errors. Implementing RFID solutions is a lot of hard work!

THE SOLUTION – Smaller, Cheaper, Faster, Longer, Better!

What Exactly Is A Smart City?

What Exactly Is A Smart City? | scatol8® | Scoop.it

It's possible that the smart-cities movement is being held back by a lack of clarity and consensus around what a smart city is and what the components of a smart city actually are.

'While some people continue to take a narrow view of smart cities by seeing them as places that make better use of information and communication technology (ICT), the cities I work with (and most of the participants in the #smartchat, a monthly Twitterchat about smart cities held on the first Wednesday of each month) all view smart cities as a broad, integrated approach to improving the efficiency of city operations, the quality of life for its citizens, and growing the local economy...

Later this year, they annual rankings of smart cities will be published, and they've been determined by a new rubric for smart cities, 'the Smart Cities Wheel.'

Smart cities are not one size fits all. Yet, the smart-cities movement could benefit from frameworks like the Smart Cities Wheel that allow a common language to develop amongst citizens, city staff, mayors, and the private sector...
