An opinion poll carried out by TNS BMRB for Scottish CND has shown massive opposition to Trident renewal amongst Scots, with the vast majority of those polled being against the renewal of the nuclear weapons system.

Jim Arnott's insight:

If you didn't know it before, you know it now: Labour are in favour of the renewal of Trident nuclear missiles.

However, despite the overwhelming opposition to Trident amongst the Scottish electorate, Labour's defence spokesman, East Renfrewshire MP Jim Murphy, ruled out scrapping the controversial nuclear weapons and vowed to press ahead with their renewal.

In an interview with the New Statesman magazine earlier this month, Mr Murphy said:

"Ed [Miliband] and I have spoken about this quite a bit and we’re in the same place, which is that we’re not a unilateralist party and we’re not about to become a unilateralist party."

Still no word from Johann Lamont and Scottish Labour on where they stand on Trident renewal. Of course ScotLab are independent of Labour at Westminster and will make their own decisions on Trident - and of course "pigs will fly"

When will Scottish Labour support the vast majority of Scots who oppose not only the abhorrent cost of renewal of Trident but also the existence of weapons of mass destruction so close to Scotland's largest city. Why don't they support moving Trident missiles closer to London.

Murphy confrims: Yes vote will get rid of Trident | Scottish National Party | SayYes2Scotland | Scoop.it

Jim Murphy today confirmed that the only possible way of Scotland getting rid of Trident was to vote Yes in 2014 as he cemented Labour’s absolute support for retaining nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

Jim Arnott's insight:

Labour can't make up its mind on where it stands on nuclear weapons. Murphy says one thing and Sarwar says the opposite. Will we ever know what they want to do about Trident renewal?

The SNP has called on Labour to make clear once and for all its position on the future of Trident as they continue to bury their head in the sand.

Even pro-UK voters reject Trident move

SCOTS are overwhelmingly opposed to replacing the Trident nuclear weapons system, with opposition running at 75% even among those planning to vote No in next year's independence referendum.

Jim Arnott's insight:

Almosy everyone I discuss Trident with are totally opposed to its replacement and most are agin it's being stationed in Scotland. They can't understand why Trident wasn't stationed in the Thames industry. Too near a population center I hear you say - oh well Glasgow's population is OK then.

Labour will fight the next general election on a pledge to retain Britain's independent nuclear deterrent, senior party sources have said.

Jim Arnott's insight:

What will Scottish Labour say to what Labour has said about retaining Britain's independent nuclear deterent. I hope Labour and Scottish Labour will define what they mean by "independent" nuclear deterrent.

At least johann Lamont will know where she stands on Trident now that her London bosses have told her. She may even be allowed to talk about it now.
