Start your child early (earning pennies to practice the four-bank system) or wait until he's old enough to do odd jobs around the house.

For all those parents out there, the jam jar concept works like a treat.  The  only challenge I found out this weekend was the time it took to deposit the "save" jar into my sons bank account.  Ps I wished I remember the fast deposit option at ASB as would have saved me 20 minutes standing in a queue with a child saying" Are we there Yet?"

Recently I have engaged with a number of parents who are concerned about their children’s future education or their ability in the future to purchase the first home.  My thoughts are, save what you can as something is better than nothing.  Over lunch with a friend he mentioned that his son keeps getting more toys than he ever plays with and has started to suggest to his family a small gift with a deposit into a bank account would be preferred.  Being a parent I am not convinced how this would be received by my family for my children.  But to be fair I haven’t tried it. Although we don’t have 529 savings accounts, as parents we could use something as simple as a bank account to save for our children.
