Dolphins have no part in this dispute with Iran | Peter Singer

Dolphins have no part in this dispute with Iran | Peter Singer | Earth Island Institute Philippines | Scoop.it

"US Navy has trained about 80 dolphins to detect mines. Some reports say that the dolphins only locate the mines and drop acoustic transponders nearby, so that humans can destroy the mines, but it is also possible for the dolphins to set off the mines and die in the resulting explosion, and, of course, using the dolphins in this way makes them – and any other dolphins in the area – targets for the Iranians to destroy if they can..."

The Queen of Trees

Clip of the Winner of Best of Festival in the International Forest Film Festival. Impeccable, creative cinematography aside, the wondrous thing about this study of a single sycomore fig, Africa's queen tree, is that it's a microcosm of the eco-complexity of the Earth at large.

Cut the Greed! Not the Greens!!!

Cut the Greed! Not the Greens!!! | Earth Island Institute Philippines | Scoop.it

Earth Island Institute Philippines expresses its support to the protest rally against the cutting and uprooting of trees in Baguio.

SM Baguio is determined to cut 43 and uproot 139 trees in Luneta Hill to pave way for the construction of its 7-storey commercial parking building.  Said place is the only remaining green zone in the central business district of Baguio.  In spite of this, the City Building and Architectures Office has already issued a permit for the project.

To cut and uproot trees is not only an issue of getting rid of trees for greedy expansion but destroying the whole ecosystem that depends on it as well.  Recent tragedies brought by devastating natural calamities should remind us and the Philippine Government about protecting our environment  --that their role is not only to respond to disaster and relief missions but to prevent those from happening.

Our trees and our natural resources are the true wealth of the people, not the fancy buildings and "progress" brought by commercialization. We could also say that trees are more dependable than our government... We should treasure and protect it.

CUT THE GREED!  NOT THE GREENS!!!

Every year on the Faroe Islands (Denmark) 2,000 to 3,000 Dolphins are brutally murdered in a ‘traditional’ ceremony. This ‘tradition’, which goes back to 1584, involves, every year. The Dolphins are bound and dragged till they are beached. Next comes a general butchery which turns the sea blood-red as young men harpoon the victims and extract their entrails.

The largest ever mining venture in the Philippines at Tampakan, South Cotabato in Mindadao by Swiss British multinational Xstrata, local name Sagittarius Mining Inc.
