Labour members ignored as party leaders refuse to pledge reversal of Royal Mail sell-off | Saor Alba | Scoop.it
Scottish News, News Scotland - Politics, Referendum, Economy, Culture and intelligent opinion | Newsnet Scotland, uniquely Scottish
Dean Brown's insight:

The Labour Party ignores its own membership and decides to keep the Royal Mail privatised if it comes to power after next UK General Election. It is therefore official that the only way to save the Royal Mail in Scotland is to vote YES in next years Scottish Independence Referendum.

Gains of Yes 3: Media Bias
Dean Brown's insight:
I am for YES because I want Scotland to have a mainstream media that actually promotes the interests of Scotland to the Scots and not the exact opposite as has been the case so far throughout the Scottish Independence Referendum, and long before.

Absolutely not!  That decision will be one for the 28 member states.  Mr Barroso, as President of the Commission has no vote on this matter.

The Scottish Citizen: Is Scotland a Country? Can you be Scottish? | Saor Alba | Scoop.it
Being independent means putting Scotland's future into Scotland's hands. It doesn't change how you describe yourself.
Dean Brown's insight:

Not being able to vote in the impending Scottish Independence Referendum for those who consider themselves Scottish ex-pats must be irritating whether they are potential YES or NO voters. However I would have thought it is particularly galling for those who want to vote NO. It is a paradox that in order for them to vote NO Scotland would have to be sovereign nation all ready, which is the thing they want to stop happening. Life is strange!

New Report Illustrates Why We Can’t Afford a No Vote

A report published 18.11.2013 by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) highlights the dangers of continuing to have policies for Scotland decided at Westminster.  BBC Bias  This directly contradicts BBC News’ and BBC Scotland’s interpretation of the same report which used it as yet another reason to vote No to Scottish independence showing the BBC incapable again of being unbiased and to inform the public only without prejudicing the outcome.
The new study acknowledges that Scotland’s public finances are currently stronger than the UK’s, but then looks at what might happen over the next 50 years under current trends.

10 facts about Scotland's oil and independence

10 facts about Scotland's oil and independence | Saor Alba | Scoop.it
Amongst all the political spin and manoeuvring, sometimes ordinary business people struggle to establish the facts about an independent Scotland.
Dean Brown's insight:

I have blogged on the Scottish Citizen quite frequently regarding the squandering of North Sea Oil whilst Scotland has been in the UK, and how there is no real reason to believe that this will change unless Scotland goes for Independence. Where did it all go right for Norway, whilst so wrong for Scotland? I think that is obvious. Norway is not attached to the UK.

Brian Reade on the privatisation of Royal Mail: Sell-off is a first-class con

Brian Reade on the privatisation of Royal Mail: Sell-off is a first-class con | Saor Alba | Scoop.it
Once all the little people’s shares have been hoovered up it will be owned by ruthless sharks who will gorge on the profits
Dean Brown's insight:

83% of Scots when polled did not want the Royal Mail privatised so they are well aware of a con when they see it. Yet Scotland can do nothing about it as this is being imposed by Westminster. No UK political party has stated that it intends to re-nationalise the Royal Mail, even the Labour Party whose UK conference overwhelmingly voted in favour of this. The SNP have stated that they will do this if Scotland votes in favour of independence in next years independence referendum. Why then are the CWU not promoting a YES vote in next years referendum when it is obvious this is in its own members interests?

Union accused of issuing anti-independence briefing note to Scottish members | Saor Alba | Scoop.it
Scottish News, News Scotland - Politics, Referendum, Economy, Culture and intelligent opinion | Newsnet Scotland, uniquely Scottish
Dean Brown's insight:

Given the CWU position that it opposes Royal Mail privatisation it is perhaps surprising that it is still promoting Better Together when their own Scottish members would be better off if Scotland was independent! This is because the SNP have promised to re-nationalise the Royal Mail in an independent Scotland and no UK party have, in particular Labour to whom the CWU are affiliated (and whose party conference voted overwhelmingly for re-nationalisation). What is the point of a unions which refuses to fight for their own members best interests?

There is very little difference between the Self-servatives, Lavender Labour and the Fib Dems on so many policies – i.e. all their platforms are based on a neo-liberal agenda that seems alien to many Scots even if many of them go out and vote for these parties in the hope that they may offer something different.

The Scottish Citizen: Change Power Supplier? What if you can't?

The Scottish Citizen: Change Power Supplier? What if you can't? | Saor Alba | Scoop.it
Mr Cameron suggests we put on a jumper to save money on energy bills. It gets a bit ridiculous when you have to put on 6 and you are still cold.
Dean Brown's insight:

A favourite line of UK politicians in particular the Conservative and Liberal Democrat ones is that you can change supplier to save on your energy bills. Due to the UK energy market not being a real market there are many people in my situation who cannot do this without incurring charges of hundreds of pounds.

In reality though changing supplier will not make much difference anyway. One of the big 6 suppliers puts their prices up and the others will follow shortly afterwards. We have after all got to ensure they get their profits since the electricity and gas industries were privatised by the Conservatives in the 1980s. As usual nothing was done by Labour to change the energy market or indeed re-nationalise these industries when they were in power from 1997. Now the Liberal Democrats are in the UK Government with the Conservatives and have done nothing either. Therefore there is no choice from the UK parties.

Mr Cameron suggests we put on a jumper to save money on energy bills. It gets a bit ridiculous when you have to put on 6 and you are still cold.

BBC Scotland targets council tax freeze the week before a crucial by-election | Saor Alba | Scoop.it
Scottish News, News Scotland - Politics, Referendum, Economy, Culture and intelligent opinion | Newsnet Scotland, uniquely Scottish
Dean Brown's insight:

The BBC has effectively planted seeds of doubt into the constituents of Dunfermline over the council tax freeze, which is precisely why they conducted such a lame brained and completely unnecessary survey into Council staffing levels in the first place. They also forget (or at least omit completely from their reports) that the Scottish Government budget constraints are being placed on it by Westminster, and with independence Scotland would be able to chose what to do as its own Government would have that power whereas presently it does not.

Westminster ignores Scottish MPs - again | Scottish National Party

Westminster ignores Scottish MPs - again | Scottish National Party | Saor Alba | Scoop.it

Commenting on the vote last night on the next stage of the controversial Lobbying Bill in the House of Commons, when the vast majority of Scottish MPS were opposed to it – but failed to stop it proceeding, Dr Eilidh Whiteford SNP MP said:

“The Lobbying Bill more commonly known as the Gagging Bill – even with its amendments - is opposed by the vast majority of Scottish MPs and yet this dog’s breakfast of rushed and ill thought out legislation is being pushed through .  82% of Scottish MPS voted against the Bill last night but once again Scotland’s democratic wishes have been ignored. Groups across the third sector have expressed huge concern about the impact on charities and that their absolutely legitimate campaigning activity could be hit by this Bill. That has been reflected by Scottish MPs but ignored at Westminster.”
