Basketball Play-by-Play Done OFF SITE

Basketball Play-by-Play Done OFF SITE | Sands Media | Scoop.it

Tonight’s broadcast of the IU/UNCC game will be different in the fact that the two announcers won't even be at the game!  Wayne Larrivee and Keno Davis, will commentate the game from BTN’s Chicago studios and IU’s Jeremy Gray will serve as sideline reporter.  This isn’t new for BTN, who have broadcast soccer, volleyball and women’s basketball games this way. But it’s rare, so far, in men’s basketball and a first for IU basketball.

Indiana University vs North Carolina Central; 7pm live (radio) and 10:30pm (tape delayed to BTDN).

Radio Ads Are Coming Back, and the Presidential Run Will Help

Radio Ads Are Coming Back, and the Presidential Run Will Help | Sands Media | Scoop.it

adio advertising, badly hit by the recession, is bouncing back.

According to a report released Friday by the Radio Advertising Bureau, revenue from radio advertising last year was $17.4 billion, up 1 percent from the year before. Automotive companies, the largest category of sponsors, made up 26 percent of spending.

It was the second year of growth for the industry, after three down years. Spending in 2010 was $17.3 billion, up 6 percent from the year before. But the market is still down 18 percent from 2007, when ad revenue was $21.3 billion, according to the advertising bureau, whose data is collected by the accounting firm Miller, Kaplan, Arase & Company.

Radioscope Names Power 106/L.A. #1 In Social Media Influence

Radioscope Names Power 106/L.A. #1 In Social Media Influence | Sands Media | Scoop.it

adio consultancy RADIOSCOPE has published a social media study that cites EMMIS Top 40/Rhythmic KPWR (POWER 106)/LOS ANGELES as having the most social media influence pile in radio. The first-of-its-kind study analyzed over 25 million tweets, FACEBOOK posts, blogs, and forums during 2011 using proprietary technology from CRIMSON HEXAGON.

"In radio, POWER 106 doesn't have the most followers, but what they do have is the respect of their social network," RADIOSCOPE Strategy Dir. RYAN GALLAGHER said. "The difference is between talking, and being talked about. POWER 106 has more of their audience’s audience, and that’s a big deal."

RADIOSCOPE gathered the TWITTER handles of the Top 10 to 15 stations in the top 100 radio markets, and the top Tweeters (stations and personalities) at those top stations, to analyze more than a year's worth of what the radio industry is "broadcasting" out to consumers online. "This is observational research at scale, the likes of which have not been possible until now. The insights are powerful for anyone working with over-the-air radio," GALLAGHER said. "This provides a phenomenal sense of where over-the-air radio, as a user-experience, stands with today’s consumer, and their audiences, and why."

For a sumamry of other key findings, read the story at AllAccess.

Single and multi-user copies of the report, titled "Radio’s New Consumer," are available exclusively at www.radioscopeinc.com/store.

OK Go Triumphs With Chevy-Sponsored Music Video | Special: Super Bowl - Advertising Age | Sands Media | Scoop.it

The band OK Go has been among the smartest (and funniest) creators of viral media since its band-on-a-treadmill music video for "Here It Goes Again" exploded in 2006. Yesterday it expanded its incomparable viral-video oeuvre (and legend) with "Needing/Getting," excerpts of which appeared in a Super Bowl ad for Chevy Sonic -- because the video co-stars the car.

Study: HD Radio "Knowledge Gap" Continues

New research by Mark Kassof & Co. reveals a continued "knowledge gap" among consumers when it comes to HD Radio. 54% of those ages 18-64 have "heard of" HD Radio, down from 67% in its 2008 HD research (though higher than 38% in 2006). Included in that 54%, however, is 16% who have only heard of HD Radio and don't know anything about it, essentially equal to what was found in 2008 (14%).

QR code stickers turn real-world objects into digital conversations

QR code stickers turn real-world objects into digital conversations | Sands Media | Scoop.it

We’ve seen QR codes being used to convey playful messages before when we covered Qkies cookies. Now San Diego-based QRawr is giving users the ability to transform any physical object into a Facebook-style digital wall, with QR code stickers linking to the users’ own photos, videos or text.

QRawr hope their stickers, printed with unique QR codes, will turn real-world items into online conversations. Users must first download the QRawr iOS app to create their own message on the QR code stickers. QRawr encourage users to be creative, suggesting the stickers could be left in restaurants linking to photos of ordered meals, or at the end of a hiking trail with a message for others who complete the trek. Spotters of QRawr stickers can scan them — once they’ve downloaded the app — and post comments, pictures and videos in response. QRawr have built the initial version of the iPhone app and are seeking funding via Kickstarter to create an Android version and add features such as geolocation.

QRawr’s founders believe the entertainment potential of QR codes has to-date been neglected. If you agree, this could this be an opportunity for you.

First to Extinction, radio deejay or print journalist? | Sands Media | Scoop.it

Scary news for our already shrinking industry.

It may come as no surprise that the job of newspaper reporter is going the way of the buggy whip maker -- but the forces of modernity have placed some unexpected occupations on the endangered species list as well. Using statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011, we identified 10 of the most surprising job categories whose numbers are projected to shrink in the coming years, plus a few that will grow so slowly that you might as well be sending your resume to Greece for a civil service job.

Entercom Petitions FCC For Change In Contest Rules

Entercom has filed a petition with the FCC, asking for changes to the rules involving disclosure of information for radio contests. The broadcaster suggests that contest rules being posted on a station's website should be enough to meet FCC requirements. According to Entercom's petition, "Americans expect to instantly access information at their fingertips by merely logging on to a website, conducting a Google search, or using an app on their smart phone."

The petition continues, "Relying on broadcast announcements for material contest information may have been an acceptable way to attempt to inform the public about the terms of a contest when the Contest Rule was enacted in 1976, but it is certainly not the case today, especially when there are superior methods that are simple to implement."
