David Jakes Presentation Resources - Developing the Design Mind: An Introduction to Design Thinking

David Jakes Presentation Resources - Developing the Design Mind: An Introduction to Design Thinking | SamuelGilbddd | Scoop.it

Session Description:

This conversation engages participants in a holistic treatment of the design thinking process, and helps them to begin developing a design mind, one that sees problems and issues always as a design problem. Participants will form design teams, and use the process of design thinking to address a contemporary issue surrounding education (design provocation). Embedded in this conversation will be strategies to help participants vision design thinking as a 21st Century pedagogy, and one that deeply engages students in developing solutions to human needs. Additionally, other components that support the process, such as developing the types of learning spaces that support such design thinking, will be addressed. After developing a prototype solution, participants will have an opportunity to share and receive feedback on their designs.

Ergonomic Office Supplies

Ergonomics play an important role in desk and office equipment

Via infozone

infozone's curator insight, June 13, 2013 2:42 AM

The advent of computers has led to a rash of preventable physical ills, such as carpal tunnel and back pain. Fortunately, many companies are creating ergonomic office supplies to prevent pain while working.

Preventing back pain while working at a computer all day can be difficult if cheap chairs and desks are used. Even the type of keyboard and mouse can have an impact on the physical structure and pain of the body. By purchasing more ergonomic items that are functional and painless to operate, individuals can spend longer times working without pain.

Setting an advantageous height setting for office chairs is an important method of preventing pain. Correcting an otherwise ungainly height can work wonders in preventing spine problems in the future. Sitting up too high and too straight can put unnecessary stress on the lower back and cause pain in the future. Adjusting the height of the desk in correlation with the chair is the best way to get the ideal vantage point. Accessibility to the keyboard, mouse, and other commonly used objects should be taken into consideration as well.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2345859,00.asp

Posture helps to further relax the body and prevent unneeded stress on joints and the back. Sitting up straight, contrary to popular belief, does not help in preventing back pain. Instead, a slight slouch with the legs at a ninety degree angle is the most natural and relaxed way to sit. Keeping feet flat or suspended on a resting bar are also good ways to help with relaxation and stress prevention. As well as this, getting up and moving around every hour or so helps to prevent joints from locking and getting stiff as the day goes on.

Ergonomic keyboard drawers serve to save space as well as make the typing device more accessible to office workers. Instead of hunching over in a chair, keyboards come directly within reach of the hands and fingers for easy use. These drawers can typically hold both the keyboard and the mouse, effectively clearing a lot of space on top of the desk for more important items. Mouse and hand rests can prevent carpal tunnel by placing the wrist in a more natural manner. This enables it to rotate and move more efficiently without stressing the joints.

Mice and split keyboards are great office products for the individual who wants to work long hours but keep their good health. More plush mice have rests for the hand and are more comfortable to hold than blockier and plastic products. A surplus of quick keys and buttons can make accessing applications and shortcuts on the computer easier, saving time and energy in reaching the keys on the keyboard. The idea to make sure that suing each device is made more comfortable and relaxing to use, instead of painful and stressful on the joints. To effectively protect the long term health of office employees, it is always advisable to invest in more ergonomic and comfortable office products.

UK's nuclear clean-up programme to cost billions more than expected | Guardian.co.uk | SamuelGilbddd | Scoop.it

The public body charged with overseeing the dismantling of Britain's network of atomic power and research stations will reveal on Monday that its estimates for the lifetime cost of the programme has risen by billions of pounds.

Despite this, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) will say in its annual report that it is getting to grips with the clean-up problem because the rate of cost growth is slowing year-on-year.

Yet the soaring costs will alarm industry critics at a time when the government is trying to encourage construction of a new generation of atomic power plants while plans to construct a permanent home for high-level radioactive waste are stalled.

In the NDA's 2011 annual report the provisional cost of dealing with the UK's nuclear legacy was put at £53bn, compared with a 2010 figure of £49bn. The new number in the 2012 set of accounts is expected to be around £55bn. But under previous accounting methods, the figure historically used has risen to well over £80bn with some predicting the final bill could exceed £100bn.

Soaring costs have already caused serious tensions with the private contractors who manage the NDA's most financially demanding site, Sellafield in Cumbria, and put pressure on a second private clean-up contract for old Magnox power stations scheduled to be awarded next year.

The NDA declined to predict the latest figure for lifetime clean-up costs, saying only "we are publishing these numbers on June 24 with our annual report", but it confirmed it is looking at the future of the Sellafield clean-up contract with fresh eyes.

Making an Office Desk Comfortable

FAM Solutions' slat wall monitor mounts and monitor supports save space at your work station

infozone's curator insight, June 13, 2013 2:25 AM

Many people have to sit at an office desk every day, leading to back and joint problems that can persist for a lifetime. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to have a comfortable workstation.

The most important piece of office equipment is the desk chair. It provides comfort and stability in the hectic office environment, and is also the best item to prevent future back pain and other problems. A soft, molding chair is ideal for someone who works on the computer all day, as it effectively moves with the sitter to provide the most protection and comfort. Some chairs are even meant to be used in conjunction with their arm rests to provide ample support for typists.

Comfort and personal health are very important when it comes to working long hours while sitting. As such, the added expense of purchasing a high-end chair is well worth the price. These tend to last for years, and mold with age when made of leather or other soft materials. A nice chair will go a long way in helping an individual enjoy their work more, boosting overall productivity.

http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/monitor-channel-218/where-find-monitor-arm-clamp-mount-3055658.html

For those that work in a home environment or in a larger, personal office space, having a separate sitting area can be an effective method of taking a break from even the most comfortable desk chair. By having a different area to relax, it creates a personal “me-time” moment where work can take a back seat for a few minutes. This prevents the dreaded “desk lunch” and also offers additional comfort of a personal space nearby. For more creative types, having a futon or sofa can provide an area to brainstorm and dream up new ideas for projects.

A big part of doing work at a desk is the amount of light available during work hours. Darker, less lit areas tend to make people more depressive and not want to work as well as someone with a well-lit workstation. As such, opening blinds or windows to bring in fresh air is a good idea for someone with the right environment. Being able to hear birds and other forms of nature can relax the mind into becoming more productive and willing to work.

A clean desk is a happy desk, and keeping it organized goes a long way in providing a work-centric environment. Lunch should not be taken every day at the desk. Instead, eating in a communal cafeteria at a large building or at a separate sitting area is a better idea. Being sure to include breaks each day is the best way to boost creative juices and ensure that the day is productive in the best way possible.

I disagree Jane. It would be great if everything were able to be accessible to everyone, but that is simply not the reality. We can't homogenise visual art into an accessible form, simply because some people can't see the fine details. That would be as wrong as never considering visually impaired persons, for example.
