Case Study in Efficiency: SOM's Diagonal Tower in South Korea

Case Study in Efficiency: SOM's Diagonal Tower in South Korea | Advanced Korean Technology | Scoop.it

SOM’s Diagonal Tower in Yongsan International Business District of Seoul, South Korea, is a case study in efficiency – the 343 meter tall tower successfully minimizes wind loads, reduces construction costs, provides dramatic views and meets strict energy codes by integrating massing, structure and performance.

The design of this landmark skyscraper, with glazed triangular facets, employs passive environmental control strategies within and on the façade – sunshades are positioned at varying angles on each building exposure, mitigating heat gain in the summer and permitting direct sunlight to warm the building’s interiors during the cold winter months. Triple pane glazed exterior curtain wall decreases energy loss, while active chilled beam system surpasses traditional air driven systems, using water as a medium for transferring heating and cooling energy, which results in less energy consumption along with great environmental comfort for building users...

Kang ji yun 's insight:

It is very wonderful building!! when it comes to the diagonal tower, it serves more than visual stimuli. Even though the Diagonal Tower is similar to Norman Foster's Hearst Tower in New York, it's megaframe reduces the amount of steel required by over 25% when compared to conventionally framed buildings.

How Korea is growing in technology world

My Scoop.it topic is Advanced Korean Technology. I was always interested in how the technological world is growing in Korea. That is why I created my topic about Advanced Korean Technology. When it comes to technological advances, Korea has been emerging as one of the leaders all over the world. My Scoop.it focuses on learning these advances as well as sharing good information about Samsung, LG, Hyundai and other companies. For example, Samsung is known as a leading manufacturer of Smartphones, so I scooped many things about Samsung smartphone such as Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy 4. Considering Samsung's technologies, 5G is very impressive for me. Through the 4G, I was already satisfied with using it. Samsung claims 5G, saying "Forget 4G". Nowadays, LG is famous for its OLED. As a result, LG Electronics will expand its lineup for Google TV's because of its extraordinary skills. Furthermore, Google will reportedly use Samsung's OLED display technology. Constant growth of Korea surprised the world. Through Scoop.it, I realized that Samsung is one of the best companies in the world because the information about Samsung is more talked about than other companies.

When someone followed my topic, I felt a strong sense of responsibility towards followers. That is because following means that followers trust my Scoop.it page and that they want to get good information through my pages. Thus, I make steady and persistent effort for my Scoop.it pages!

Apple Violates Samsung Patent, U.S. Trade Panel Says | NYTimes.com

Apple Violates Samsung Patent, U.S. Trade Panel Says | NYTimes.com | Advanced Korean Technology | Scoop.it

Apple’s legal victory against Samsung Electronics over patents in the United States is not flawless. A trade commission on Tuesday determined that the company had violated one of Samsung’s patents, and it ordered a ban on some older Apple devices.

But the ban is unlikely to have an immediate impact on sales of those devices in the United States.

The United States International Trade Commission said on Tuesday that it was issuing a ban for a handful of devices that work on AT&T’s network, including the third- and fourth-generation iPhone, and the first-, second- and third-generation iPads that have a cellular connection.

President Obama has 60 days to review the order and can veto it.

Apple said it intended to appeal the decision, so it will be some time until the commission’s decision goes into effect, if at all.
