I am glad to see they are finally legallized gay marriage and the vote ended with a 37 to 30 so they won by a good amount. After the voting was over there were hundred supporters out side of the capital.

I'm also glad that this issue has finally been settled in our state. It will be interesting to see if it leads to other states taking up the same argument in the near future.

The Tragic Emptiness of 'The Great Gatsby' | The Atlantic Wire

The Tragic Emptiness of 'The Great Gatsby' | The Atlantic Wire | Sampson's Current Issues | Scoop.it
While certainly not a disaster, Baz Lurhrmann's opulent adaptation begins to look and feel like something grand and profound, before transforming into a decidedly unthoughtful stagger through familiar territory.

Sounds like the HIGH POINT is Craig Armstrong's original score...

" But it's what composer Craig Armstrong does with those tunes, turning them into orchestral riffs that haunt and envelop, that's really striking. When that music swells and the green light burns, the picture feels truly 3D, immersive and captivating. But unfortunately those moments are increasingly few and fleeting. "

Behaving like animals: The Bonobo and the Atheist

Behaving like animals: The Bonobo and the Atheist | Sampson's Current Issues | Scoop.it
Tessa Kendall reviews Frans de Waal's new book, The Bonobo and the Atheist. How much of our humanist behaviour do we owe to our cousins in the animal kingdom?

(de Waal) calls the idea that civilisation and morality are imposed on a violent, immoral, selfish nature Veneer Theory and concludes, "Everything science has learned in the last few decades argues against the pessimistic view that morality is a thin veneer over a nasty human nature."

Human morality is "firmly anchored in the social emotions, with empathy at its core" (De Waal, Our Inner Ape). The desire to treat others well comes from altruism which, in turn, comes from empathy...

For many years, De Waal's claim that other animals display altruism and empathy was ignored or rejected. What his latest book achieves is to put onto a firm evidential basis the fact that the roots of our social behaviour can be seen in other animals. The question is no longer whether animals have empathy but how it works.

Republican Mayor Jerry Sanders Records Pro-Gay Marriage Commercial | Sampson's Current Issues | Scoop.it

by MIKE WILLE

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders will appear on a pro-gay marriage television commercial to be aired in the Tampa market during the Republican National Convention next week.

Sanders, a Republican who has a lesbian daughter, has been a vocal support of the same-sex marriage movement in the last five years.

"Marriage strengthens families, and we need more of that in this country, not less," said Sanders, speaking on camera with the downtown San Diego skyline as a background.

The ad is sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign and a group called Freedom to Marry. [MORE]

I'm a Catholic and Christian but I don't use my religion to dictate my worldview, other than my belief in respect for others...opposing oppression, tyranny and terrorism/killing of innocent lives. But, people don't need religion to know that you should respect others, and oppose these things...but it sure helps to have a strong foundation with morals and beliefs based on these beliefs. Islam is not based on these beliefs and does not teach love and respect for others!

The Dying Branch of Bigotry | Daylight Atheism | Big Think

The Dying Branch of Bigotry | Daylight Atheism | Big Think | Sampson's Current Issues | Scoop.it

The 2008 elections, in which pro-gay-marriage campaigners won a sweep at the ballot box, is a clear sign that the tide of society is shifting in favor of equality. We've known for a long time that this was coming, since the younger generations now replacing the older ones are overwhelmingly comfortable with equal rights. In the Western world, prejudice is like a dying branch - it may still have leaves, but it's dead at the base, and the rot is only going to spread upwards. Still, there are some surviving outgrowths of bigotry that are worth commenting upon.
