Schoolies is not worth the risk (Aus)

Schoolies is not worth the risk (Aus) | Samantha's Year 9 Journal | Scoop.it

IT SAYS a lot about Australia's binge-drinking culture that an event such as schoolies week - where drunken violence, date rape and death by misadventure is relatively commonplace - is regarded as a routine rite of passage for young people who in most case aren't even old enough to drink legally.

Via ReGenUC
Samantha Schiodtz's insight:

Article's like these are the explanation for parents being hesitant towards schoolies. The articles provide awareness as to what goes on after graduation, although its confronting, it is hard hitting facts. Some teens don't realise the amount of alcohol their body can take in one sitting, so they drink as much as they want. They are also influenced by older people that have a higher intake rate; they see people in movies, their parents, friends drinking and find it's not so bad.

Little did they know...

China's Proposed Ban On HIV-Positive Bathers Highlights Misconceptions

China's Proposed Ban On HIV-Positive Bathers Highlights Misconceptions | Samantha's Year 9 Journal | Scoop.it
Flying in the face of medical research, China's Ministry of Commerce recently released a proposal to prohibit access to public baths for carriers of the HIV virus and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Via Umur Gultekin
Samantha Schiodtz's insight:

Considering HIV/AIDS isn't spread through skin contact or contagious in terms of being in the same vacinity as someone, this rule only encourages people to misunderstand the disease and further discriminate against people who may have it.

Umur Gultekin's curator insight, November 15, 2013 11:20 PM

"Banning HIV patients from using public bathhouses and spas will only exacerbate people's misunderstanding, discrimination and fear of HIV/Aids, and will not help reduce the transmission of the disease," he said.

This is very true, this will not help majorly reduce the transmission of the disease, only increase discrimination and fear. This is not a viable solution, as we are all human beings and all have equal rights.
