Software License Optimization: Oracle Database Licensing in a VMware Virtual Environment (Part 1 of 3)

Software License Optimization: Oracle Database Licensing in a VMware Virtual Environment (Part 1 of 3) | Software Licensing | Scoop.it
By Vincent Brasseur Oracle’s database product is offered with two types of licenses: Named User Plus (NUP) based on the number of users using the database and Processor based on the physical characteristics of the device (server) supporting the database process. Named User Plus licenses are used when the total number of users is identifiable and limited. (See the blog: Oracle’s Magic Ratio for more information on how to determine when to use NUP versus Processor based licensing). Processor licenses must be used when users cannot be counted or identified, for instance internet applications, or when the number of users...

In a press statement issued yesterday, Dr. Barbara Rembiesa offers up 6 questions that the DOJ should ask the IRS in relation to faulty or non-existent ITAM (IT Asset Management) processes. This has led to much speculation in regards to the whereabouts or existence of specific IRS hard drives and emails. With the exception of the first question, this release will serve as a good starting place for any organization to identify if they are instituting proper processes that mitigate risk in regards to disaster recovery and disposal.  Situations like this show that organizations cannot just focus on a single aspect of their ITAM program while ignoring the rest.

IAITAM is focused on advocating ITAM best practice and will continue to drive awareness regarding ITAM related issues publicly further promoting the need for IAITAM certifications and best practices training.

Downgrade Right, just Blink

Volume Licensing and Windows Server OEM offer unlimited downgrade rightsVolume Licensing and Windows Server OEM offer unlimited downgrade rights. Windows 8.1 Pro OEM offers the right to downgrade to Windows 7 Professional or Windows Vista Business. Check out the Licensing Brief “Downgrade Rights” for details: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/briefs/downgrade-rights.asp

ronald scherpenisse's insight:

Microsoft Volume Licensing agreements include references to specific rights to use any prior versions of Microsoft
licensed software. These rights are often referred to as “downgrade rights.”

Microsoft distinguishes between the term “version” and “edition” when referring to product licenses. The term “edition”
means different functional offerings within a product family that are usually released simultaneously (for example,
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 and Microsoft Office Standard 2010). The term “version” refers to different
generations of a product family.

Downgrade rights between the current generation (N), the prior generation (N-1), and the
generation prior to that (N-2) are limited to the same functional editions within each version (for example, Windows 8.1
Enterprise downgrades to Windows 8 Enterprise or Windows 7 Enterprise; however, Windows 8.1 Pro doesn’t downgrade
to Windows 8 Enterprise or Windows 7 Enterprise). For more information about access to prior product versions, please
see the Fulfillment information section of the Microsoft.com/Licensing site at

http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/existing-customers/fulfillment.aspx

Software License Optimization: Oracle Database Licensing in a VMware Virtual Environment (Part 3 of 3)

Software License Optimization: Oracle Database Licensing in a VMware Virtual Environment (Part 3 of 3) | Software Licensing | Scoop.it
By Vincent Brasseur There are multiple ways to optimize Oracle in a VMware virtualized environment. In part 2 of this blog series, a simple solution consisting of consolidating multiple Oracle databases on a single VMware server or cluster was described. This architecture can be used in different configurations to provide additional benefits and cost savings. Coming back to the simple case scenario where consolidation occurs, a simple fact is that all databases do not have peak CPU loading at the same time. One application can stay idle most of the week and have a peak during weekends or a specific...
