Seven ways business networking is like online dating

Seven ways business networking is like online dating | Sales & Relationship Management | Scoop.it

Some people have said that business networking and career connecting is just like dating. With the advent of work intranets and social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, the world of business networking is as much about online interacting as the more traditional, face to face offline gatherings.

When you network online, you’re simply finding, connecting and engaging with people to fulfil your commercial or career objectives. If you swap the words ‘commercial’ or ‘career’ for ‘romantic’ then you’ve stepped into the world of online dating, a multi-billion pound industry in the UK alone.

For many a lonely, busy business professional, online dating is a convenient ‘lead generation’ mechanism which hopefully puts you in front of any number of eligible, available and interested romantic prospects. Indeed, it’s said that one in four relationships is initiated online.

Survey Reveals Which Demographics Use What Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

Survey Reveals Which Demographics Use What Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC] | Sales & Relationship Management | Scoop.it

A massive survey of internet users reveals trends in social media usage across numerous platforms, ages, races, genders, population density and which social media sites do they frequently visit.

The Pew Research Center has released the results of a comprehensive social media survey, conducted over several years to evaluate which demographics were using social media, and on which platforms. Which social networking sites emerged on top?

Of the online adults surveyed at the end of 2012:

67% use Facebook

20% use LinkedIn

16% use Twitter

15% use Pinterest

13% use Instagram

6% use Tumblr

A decent amount of Americans appear to be using social media, but which demographics use social media in greater numbers?

It appears that women use social media 9% more than men do, at a whopping rate of 71%. Other frontrunners with the highest social network activity in their demographic include city dwellers(70%), Hispanics (72%) and adults with a household income below $30,000 annually (72%).

The most pervasive and consistent divider amongst social media users remains, unsurprisingly, their age. 83% of the young adult demographic (18-29 year olds) use social media, which is well over double the activity of online adults over 65 years old (32%).

This is one area that I can help with. I offer a variety of therapies which will help to reduce your stress levels and give you the much needed time out even 10 minutes and I offer these therapies not only in a variety of clinics but due to the lack of time people have I can come to the office environment. During the therapy you remain fully clothed and I work with you to cause the least disruption to the work being carried out. As little as 10 minutes can make a huge difference to a persons life. We think we have not got the time but can you really afford for the negative effects of stress to build up?
WorkplaceIncentives's curator insight, May 12, 2013 11:19 PM

Stress is often seen as the result of an event. The event causes stress. However this isn't true. We as individuals have the ability to control whether or not we 'get stressed'. It is in fact our perception of any event or 'thing' that may cause us to be stressed. Should we perceive an event in a positive light or choose to frame the event constructively, we can prevent ourselves from becoming stressed. As you're reading this insight you might be thinking that it may seem like we're stating the obvious and yet so many people, probably including yourself, get stressed on a regular basis...

Jesse Wieser's curator insight, May 20, 2013 7:43 PM

My thoughts

After reading this article, I find the mini-relaxation plans suggested are a huge help when your running on little to no time and just need a quick breather. The relaxation plan in this article goes into detail about what can you do to relieve some stress in 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, etc. which can be very helpful even trying these plans in between classes on account of the fact school can be very stressful at times. What I enjoyed the most about this article is the 2 minute relaxation plan, where I'll be taking 1 deep breath for every number I count down too since deep-breathing helps relieves stress and some of the bad toxins in your body.

800 Best SEO Posts of the Last 4 Years

800 Best SEO Posts of the Last 4 Years | Sales & Relationship Management | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article intro on Search Engine Watch:

"Since March 26, 2009, I have been using Reader's "star" functionality to highlight SEO resources I feel will be useful to me again at some point in the future, or warrant sharing with my team.

The result of this obsessive reading and starring of RSS feeds was an easily-accessible, hand-curated database of great articles covering almost any conceivable SEO topic stretching back 4 years.

Google allowed me to get a backup of them as a .json file. The bad news was that no RSS reader (to my knowledge) had the functionality to import them alongside the feeds I subscribe to.

End result: I was faced with the task of cleaning and formatting the data in the .json file if I wanted to still be able to access my 4 year-old collection of useful blog posts and news items.

I soon realized that although this task was onerous, it would provide me with a great opportunity to: 1. Build a great resource for other SEO professionals 2. Understand how my perception of "a great SEO article" had changed since 2009 3. Rate the major SEO publications based on whose feed had received the most stars..."

I think it's interesting the way small business owners and large business owners differentiate at handling the same things. One thing may be more of importance to a small owner than an owner with a larger company. It could also be the lack of experience that small companies may have opposed to a larger company who deals with larger amounts of things on a day to day basis.

The most important reason to schedule buffers is to just catch your breath. There is no faster way to feel as though your day is not your own, and that you are no longer in control, than scheduling meetings back to back from the minute you arrive at the office until the moment you leave. I’ve felt the effects of this and seen it with colleagues. Not only is it not fun to feel this way, it’s not sustainable.

7. Get feedback from people you trust.

The advice and encouragement of others helps keep your "brand development" on target.  Philip Styrlund, CEO of The Summit Group, recommends setting up a "board of directors"--a few trusted colleagues who can assess your ongoing efforts and act as an informal sounding board.

8. Be authentic, even a bit risky.

As long as you don't come off like you're crazy or weird, a little opinion in your online presence is a good thing, according to Meg Guiseppi, author of the book 23 Ways You Sabotage Your Executive Job Search. "Don't assume that being authentic will turn people off," she explains. "Nobody is interested in working with a cookie cutter."

Conclusion

The possibilities of link building are endless. You can build links in many different ways, you just have to be creative. What I’ve learned over the years is the best link builders are the creative ones.

Just look at Matt Inman, no one would have thought that he would rank a site for online dating, but he was able to do it in a matter of months because of how he built links.

All you have to do is think outside the box as the list above is just scrapping the surface. What other creative ways are you building links?
