So you’re diving into Marketing Technology, or you’re embracing a marketing technology that is more sophisticated than what you currently use. Here are a few must-haves to help ensure a successful implementation and ongoing execution:

 

1) Buy-in. Let’s assume the Marketing crew has bought into the need for the MT, and let’s assume that management has bought into it as well. It’s your internal suppliers and internal customers from whom you need support and buy-in. Sales not bought in? They’ll reject it (or not work with you). IT? Every roadblock imaginable will be placed in your path.

 

2) A plan for implementation and ongoing management and optimization. Specifically, you’ll need a project plan with a project manager (Marketing Ops?) to drive the cross-functional rollout and communication, as well as manage it on an ongoing basis. Single POC with the support to do as required.

 

3) KPIs. As a part of the ongoing management are the measureable objectives so that the team understands the path to take. Yes: the KPIs will change, but the rudder is a requirement.

 

4) People. You have to have the right caliber of people in place to manage and modify your technologies. Without this, you’ll cede control to others, e.g., IT.

 

5) Reporting. Obviously you need the reports for your dashboard (hopefully integrated into your dashboard). But more than that is the need to understand the constant changes in the marketing technology landscape so that: (1) you’re always using best practices; (2) you’re working with the solution that best fits your needs; and (3) you’re evaluating new technologies that may change your thinking regarding your marketing operations.

 

Without any of these five, you’re subject to failure and duplicity. CYA.
